About You
You love the creative process where you bring your own ideas while also incorporating ideas from others into your art. You're imaginative to the point where an audience can look at your work and immediately see the fun, and yet you're also practical in recognizing simplicity helps focus product experience into a more effective learning tool. You like chess, teaching, and building light-hearted worlds that help audiences want to improve both inside and outside the game.

What you'll do
Long-term, you'll help build and define our creative vision and visual style and help Chess.com move from more serious to more playful, fun, and challenging art styles. You will be an essential member of the team, contributing to a range of product and branding initiatives.

Day to day you'll create illustrative assets that bring the vision to life and joy to players as they continue on their Chess journey. You'll collaborate with product, animation, motion design, and engineering to see these assets come to life.

Required Skills
  • Grand Master command of designing vector artwork with a bias for optimized construction using tools like Adobe Illustrator and Figma
  • Excellent 2D art and illustration skills (you know Photoshop inside and out)
  • A keen eye for composition, perspective, color theory, and directing the viewer’s eye
  • Comfortable creating a range of art assets including environments, objects, storyboards, characters, and clothing
  • Superb imagination and creativity within the direction of a creative world and interactive product
  • Ability to match an established art style yet flexible enough to work in a variety of styles, for both illustration and vector art
  • 3+ years of experience in a gaming environment
  • Ability to pick up new technical skills and concepts quickly
  • Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Great collaboration across a small team pod and larger product team, owning pipeline deliverables autonomously with some support
  • Versatile, flexible, and willing to do what's needed in a fast-moving environment
  • You’ve got a portfolio that demonstrates the needs of the role well

Nice to have
  • Knowledge of animation pipelines building 2d assets for game animation
  • Experience bringing characters and user interfaces to life with motion design tools like Lottie, Rive, or CSS
