Job Title: Academic Advisor 1
Department: Nursing | College Administration

Fosters student success within the College of Nursing by implementing proactive strategies that help students stay on track to fulfill their educational goals. Advises students on University policy and procedures, program and degree requirements, and related academic matters. Assists in student orientation and teaches student survey course. Acquires information for students, including academic, career, financial, psychological, and other resources.

Provides and documents one on one advising to undergraduate students regarding degree and program options, academic standards, general education, prerequisite requirements, and major courses for specific degrees. Consults and/or elevates outstanding matters that students may have to more senior staff. Advises students dealing with academic, probationary, and financial concerns. Reviews and processes adds/drops, withdrawals, and program changes. Acquires information for students, including academic, career, financial, psychological and other resources.

Assists in student orientation. Prepares for orientation sessions and presents orientation materials. Teaches student survey course. Utilizes established materials, with few alterations, to convey content effectively. Attends trainings and grades course assignments.

Under regular direction, may participate in special projects as assigned. Identifies opportunities for projects and recommends to management. Engages in professional development, participates in unit and university- level opportunities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Required:
- Able to communicate complex ideas in a manner that adapts to student needs. Able to articulate program requirements to a variety of audiences, including students, parents, faculty, partner units, etc.
- Able to use relational skills such as active listening, interviewing/questioning techniques
- Demonstrates basic communication skills
- Able to perform basic transactions in SIS
- Demonstrates basic multi-cultural and inclusion skills

Desired:
- Understands and follows FERPA guidelines
- Base knowledge and application of university's and unit's advising policies, such as drop deadlines, override requirements, petition process, faculty rules, registrar processes, etc.
- General knowledge of academic advising, including general education, enrollment plans, changing demographics, etc.
- Knowledge of general education requirements and learning outcomes
- Understands demographics of their unit's student population; able to identify a student's progress toward degree

Additional Information:
$17.10-$22.50 hourly

By the start of employment, all newly hired employees must receive at least the first dose of a two-dose series or a single dose of a one-dose series COVID-19 vaccination. Individuals who choose a two-dose series vaccination must receive the second dose within 45 days of their start date. Proof of vaccination will be required at time of hire.

Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, College of Medicine or OSUP Employees are not eligible for personal exemptions. All exemptions are subject to Ohio State’s approval and subject to change, including revocation, due to legal and regulatory requirements.
