Academic Advisor Full Description

The broad scope of science at Purdue is our strength. 
The College of Science seeks an academic advising professional who will contribute to exemplary advising services for Math and Statistics undergraduate students at our Purdue West Lafayette location. College of Science advising is predicated on the belief that individualized relationships set the stage for student success and high advisor impact and satisfaction. As an Academic Advisor you will promote an inclusive environment that challenges and supports students by providing meaningful opportunities for student learning, development, and integration of curricular and co-curricular experiences. Advisors empower students to be active, responsible learners while guiding students to make well-informed decisions that lead to achieving students' educational, career, and life goals.
 
 In the role of an Academic Advisor, you will:
•    Create an open and respectful environment in where students of diverse backgrounds and interests feel comfortable exploring and defining their goals and curricular pathways
•    Empower students to be active, responsible learners and assist them in making well-informed decisions
•    Guide students in course selection and the process of registering for courses
•    Identify campus activities and program opportunities related to students' major
•    Maintain a consistent pattern of contact and communication with assigned students
•    Use data to provide timely outreach to students on their academic progress and conduct audits on students’ degree progress
•    Assess when a student’s situation requires referral to campus resources
•    Maintain and ensure the confidentiality of student records
•    Teach students about the university’s structure, systems, policies, and practices
 
A cover letter is required for consideration. 
The budgeted annual salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $46,000.

What We're Looking For
Education and Experience Needed:
  • Must have a graduate or professional degree in a field relevant to the position
  • Equivalencies are not accepted for this position
 
Preferred:
  • One (1) year of studetn advising, recruitment, or other student-facing experience
 
Skills Needed:
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to:
    • problem solve and utilize campus resources for individuals and groups
    • collaborate with faculty, staff, current and prospective students, parents, and families
    • navigte a changing environment

  • Knowledge of:
    • undergraduate student development and recruitment
    • programs and majors at Purdue University
    • field related to majors advised
