  • Experience working with first-year, first-generation, transfer, military connected, student-athlete, or other specialized student populations.
  • Experience navigating and explaining complex policies in higher education.
Job Description

Academic advising is a collaborative, ongoing relationship that supports students as they
explore their path, clarify their goals, navigate challenges, and prepare for their future.
The Academic Advisor I serves as a primary point of contact for an assigned caseload of
students, providing holistic, proactive, and developmental advising that supports academic
success from onboarding through completion. Through ongoing relationships and meaningful
conversations, the Academic Advisor I guides students in clarifying their goals, navigating
academic requirements, overcoming challenges, and developing the knowledge, skills, and
confidence necessary to achieve their educational and career aspirations. Reporting to the
Assistant Director of Academic Advising, the Academic Advisor I encourages self-advocacy,
decision-making, goal setting, and personal responsibility.
Job Duties
Caseload Management and Student Support/Advocacy and Resource Navigation
• Manage an assigned caseload of students throughout their academic journey.
• Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with students through regular
communication and outreach.
• Monitor student progress toward degree completion and academic goals.
• Conduct individual and group advising appointments.
• Maintain accurate and timely advising records, notes, and student interactions.
• Utilize advising technologies and academic success platforms to track student
engagement and progress.
• Connect students with campus and community resources, including but not limited to
tutoring, financial aid, counseling, accessibility services, career services, and
academic support programs.
• Advocate for students while empowering them to navigate university systems
independently and with confidence.
• Assist students in understanding available resources and opportunities.
• Facilitate “warm hand-off" referrals and follow-up support when appropriate.

Academic Planning and Degree Progression
• Teach and support students in developing educational plans aligned with their
academic, personal, and career goals.
• Educate students on course selection, registration, degree planning, and graduation
preparation.
• Interpret and communicate institutional policies, procedures, and academic
requirements.
• Facilitate learning and reflection related to major exploration, major changes, and
career pathway identification.
• Teach students how to understand degree requirements, navigate academic
milestones, and review completion of degree requirements for graduation.

Proactive Outreach and Academic Success Interventions
• Identify students who may benefit from additional support through early alerts,
academic performance indicators, and engagement data.
• Conduct proactive outreach to students experiencing academic, personal, or
transitional challenges.
• Develop intervention plans that promote persistence, retention, and degree
completion.
• Collaborate with faculty and campus partners to coordinate support services.
• Support students through critical transition points, including first-year experiences,
major selection, probation recovery, and graduation preparation.

Collaboration and Partnership
• Work with faculty, staff, and campus departments to implement academic success
initiatives.
• Participate in retention, persistence, and academic success efforts.
• Contribute to advising-related committees, projects, and institutional initiatives.
• Participate in outreach campaigns, workshops, orientation programs, and academic
success programming.

Professional Development and Continuous Improvement
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of advising best practices, student development theory,
and institutional policies.
• Engage in ongoing professional development and training.
