Academic Support Specialist

Overview:

Under the supervision of the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and in Coordination with the Office of Academic Services and Institutional Support (OASIS), the Academic Support Specialist will support DO program students in identifying and implementing effective study strategies, i.e. study skills, time management, test taking and related topics. The Academic Support Specialist collaborates with faculty and administrators to identify students who are experiencing academic challenges, then works directly with the students, evaluating their learning needs, and developing individualized study strategies and learning plans that are appropriate for the required DO program courses and exams, including licensing exams. The person will provide programming to all DO program students who wish to enhance their study skills (i.e. study skills, time management, test taking, and other related topics) and will serve as a resource for faculty, staff, administrators and students to determine how best to provide support for students who are struggling academically. This role will also include implantation and monitoring of a pathway program for students who struggle academically.

 

Responsibilities:

• Identify the academic support and developmental needs of students and serve as an advocate for supportive learning environments
• Design individualized student study strategies and learning plans to help students to succeed academically. Monitor and follow up on individual student’s academic improvement plan progress.
• Maintain case files for all students receiving services
• Design and provide various programs and class-based presentations on increasing academic performance including such topics as test taking, time management, study skills, learning effectiveness, etc.
• Maintain awareness of the DO program academic calendar, design and flow of course work, and board exams
• Attend and serve on committees as needed
• Consult with individual faculty who want advice on working with students who experience academic difficulties.
• Work flexible hours, if necessary, including some evenings and Sundays
• Lead the development [AJW2.1]and continuous improvement of a pathway program for students who do not successfully complete specific coursework, including the specific course design needed.
• Work in conjunction with the OASIS Team to aid our students in their academic success

• Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications:

• Minimum of bachelor’s degree required, with a concentration in the field of adult learning, academic advising, educational psychology, counseling or related field; equivalent work experiences may also be considered. Master’s degree preferred
• 2 years of experience in adult learning and assessment of learning deficits preferred
• Experience working with students to improve their study effectiveness, time management skills, and testing abilities
• Experience with medical students preferred.
• A record of success with assisting adult learners to improve their study effectiveness, time management skills, and test performance.

Maximum Salary: USD $75,000.00/Yr.

Minimum Salary: USD $60,000.00/Yr.
