Access Consultant Full Description

Join Purdue University Fort Wayne: 
Purdue University Fort Wayne is currently seeking a fulltime, onsite Access Consultant in our Disability Access Center (DAC). The Access Consultant assists the office in administering access and support for students with disabilities. The pay for this position is $46,000.08 annually.
 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Manages a significant student caseload administering access and highly specialized support for students with disabilities and will conduct the interactive process, which determines and implements reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities, resulting in students gaining full and equitable access to curricular and co-curricular environments, reviewing additional sources of information as needed, including, but not limited to, medical documentation, IEPs, and 504 plans.
  • Coordinates the provision of reasonable accommodations in consultation with students, faculty and staff.
  • Maintains appropriate records by documenting communication with and regarding students and others. who are involved in the process of facilitating access and recording recommended courses of action or accommodations.
  • Assists with the implementation of auxiliary accommodations such as Closed Captioning, Sign Language Interpreters, Peer Notetakers, Alternative Formats, Assistive Technology, Laboratory Assistants, Accessible Furniture, and Accommodated Testing.
  • Assists the Associate Director and Senior Access Consultant with day-to-day office responsibilities and matters as needed.
  • Serves as a member on division-wide and campus-wide committees as assigned or volunteered.
  • Assists the Senior Access Consultant with campus outreach activities that are educational in nature as well as in response to identified needs.
  • Takes a leadership role across campus representing the DAC while promoting “Best Practices in Higher Education Disability Services” that is informed by the Social Model of Disability.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field. *A Bachelor’s Degree with 5 years of experience in disability related work, preferred in either postsecondary or K12 will be considered*
  • Minimum of 1-2 years working within the higher education student affairs profession in professional and management roles.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals with disabilities in a postsecondary or K12 setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of State and Federal laws related to Disability Rights: ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 508, ADAAA, and their application to higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals with disabilities in a postsecondary setting.
  • Knowledge of models of disability and inclusive educational design and their application in higher education.
  • Knowledge of the application of federal and state laws that provide for an accessible higher education experience for disabled students.
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service to a robust and diverse campus community.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including email, phone, and in-person communication.
  • Ability to assist in managing competing priorities and troubleshoot, as needed.
  • Sensitivity when working with confidential information and have the ability to maintain this confidentiality at all times.
