Job Description 
Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.

At Mountain Empire Community College, our Enrollment Services team plays a pivotal role in ensuring all students have the support they need to succeed. We are looking for a dedicated
Admissions Officer to join our team and serve as a primary point of contact for current and prospective students. As an Admissions Officer, you will provide exceptional customer service and assist students through their journey of admission, registration, and enrollment. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment, has strong attention to detail, and is passionate about helping students achieve their educational goals.
Key Responsibilities: Student Service: Serve as the first point of contact for all current and prospective students, offering friendly and knowledgeable support via in-person interactions, email, phone, and remote communication.
Admissions Process: Provide guidance and assistance to students with the application for admission, ensuring all policies and procedures are followed. Use independent judgment to interpret guidelines and make decisions based on individual applications.
Selective Admissions Administration: Manage the selective admissions process for specialized programs such as the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Respiratory Therapy programs, ensuring accurate processing and timely communication with applicants.
Data Management: Accurately input and retrieve student information using specialized office equipment and commercial software, ensuring error-free registration and enrollment data.
Enrollment Reporting & Certification: Support enrollment reporting processes and assist with academic records maintenance, ensuring compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.
Veteran Support: Serve as backup for the Veterans Affairs Officer, assisting military veterans with enrollment and verification processes to ensure they receive the benefits and support they are entitled to.
Confidentiality & Compliance: Maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism while working with sensitive student information and adhering to organizational policies and regulations.
Continuous Improvement: Demonstrate a commitment to innovation, continuous learning, and quality improvement in all aspects of the role, contributing to a positive, student-centered environment.

This position is designated as a covered employee in a non-restricted position in accordance with Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) Policy 2.20. A non-restricted position is one that is funded by sources considered continuous or recurring, such as Educational and General Funds.

A covered employee is a salaried employee whose terms and conditions of employment are subject to the Virginia Personnel Act and who is employed in a classified position. In accordance with DHRM policies, covered employees accumulate paid leave, participate in state retirement, life insurance, and related plans, participate in the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program, are eligible to participate in the state health plan and flexible benefits program, and are subject to the provisions of all DHRM policies.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information with discretion. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. A caring and empathetic approach to student service. Demonstrated ability to effectively use computers, software applications, and electronic systems required in the performance of daily job duties, with the capacity and willingness to learn new technologies, systems, and electronic processes as organizational needs evolve. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment. Interpret and follow oral and written rules and regulations. Working knowledge of office practices, procedures, and currently used office equipment. Ability to maintain both paper and electronic filing systems. Good command of standard English grammar, punctuation and usage; basic computational arithmetic including fractions, decimals, and percentages. Ability to maintain a positive professional image. Ability to work respectfully and productively with others. Ability to organize, manage and maintain a data imaging system (ImageNow).
Minimum required qualifications: Experience or credentialed in Business, Human Services, Administrative Support Technology or related field. High school diploma or equivalent. Knowledge/experience in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Additional Considerations  | Knowledge/experience in Student Information Systems (SIS), preferably PeopleSoft. Extensive experience in an office setting. Experience working in a community college setting.
