Job Summary
Purdue IT | Remote for the right person
The Application Developer is a fully competent and productive professional contributor who works under general direction to develop, test, implement, and support new and existing software applications. This role collaborates with University stakeholders, cross‑functional IT teams, and, as appropriate, outside partners to deliver technical solutions that meet defined business needs using established architectures, frameworks, and development practices. This role supports critical systems that help the university manage course registration, academic scheduling, and future planning. The successful candidate will work with technology used to optimize course access for students while also supporting data-driven decisions related to classroom utilization, instructional resources, and strategic growth initiatives. It is an opportunity to contribute to systems that have a direct and meaningful impact on both the student experience and the university's long-term planning efforts.
The Application Developer works on moderately complex technical work, supports application documentation, and follows established coding standards and best practices. This position analyzes, modifies, and maintains existing applications, providing monitoring, troubleshooting, and issue resolution to ensure reliable system performance and usability. In addition, the Application Developer contributes to project and enhancement efforts by implementing assigned tasks, supporting testing activities, and assisting with effort estimation and technical analysis. The role participates in agile development processes, supports continuous improvement initiatives, and collaborates with senior team members to deliver solutions efficiently and consistently.
What We're Looking For
Education and Experience Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering
  • Two (2) or more years of professional application development experience across the full systems development lifecycle (SDLC), including analysis, design, development, testing, implementation, maintenance and enhancement of applications
  • In lieu of degree, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required experience (associate’s degree + 4 years of experience; HS/HSE+ 6 years of experience)
Skills Needed:
  • Proficiency in one or more modern programming languages (e.g., JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, C#, Python)
  • Solid understanding of web-based application development technologies, frameworks, and common architectural patterns
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, including the ability to diagnose production issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions
  • Experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases and API-based integrations
  • Knowledge of secure coding practices and methods for protecting data and systems from unauthorized access
Ability to:
  • interpret, document, and translate business and end-user requirements into effective technical solutions
  • execute all phases of the systems development lifecycle (SDLC), including analysis, design, development, testing, implementation, maintenance, and enhancement of both internally developed and third‑party systems
  • learn and apply new programming languages, frameworks, tools, and techniques as technologies evolve
  • assess requirements, estimate development effort, prioritize assigned work, and meet deadlines
  • collaborate effectively and communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • provide application support after hours and on weekends as required
Preferred:
  • Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud) and/or containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience supporting or developing multiple enterprise applications simultaneously
  • Experience working in Agile development environments (e.g., Scrum, Kanban)
  • Experience writing or contributing to technical documentation, user guides, training materials, or knowledge-base articles
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, version control, or DevOps practices
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards, performance optimization techniques, and security testing tools
