We are seeking an Application Development Manager to join the Student Affairs’ IT team in Blacksburg, VA. This role plays a vital part in supporting strategic leadership, overseeing modern, user focused application development for Student Affairs.

Here is what you need to know about the role. You will be:
1. Joining the SAIT (Student Affairs IT) team, an innovative, service-oriented department dedicated to solution-focused processes that are responsive, agile, and efficient.
2. Reporting to the Director for SAIT. This position is a regular, Calendar Year (CY), 100% Staff appointment.
3. Leading the strategy, operations, and development team responsible for creating, enhancing, and supporting secure, user focused software solutions for Student Affairs, including custom applications, low code workflows, and data dashboards.
4. Ensuring development practices align with Student Affairs’ priorities by driving innovation through emerging technologies, such as generative AI, automation, and Power Platform, maintaining a reliable and secure application ecosystem, and overseeing project governance, architecture, vendor solutions, and lifecycle optimization.
5. Collaborating with departments across Student Affairs and SAIT operations to identify needs, develop solutions, and ensure technology supports divisional goals.
6. Given the chance to grow and take advantage of a development plan with opportunities to advance within the Department and the Division.
7. Offered a salary in the range of $75,000 to $84,556 plus a

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Management Information Systems, or a related field.
• Five or more years of progressively responsible experience leading or managing software development projects and teams.
• Experience with web application development, including familiarity with LAMP stacks or similar application frameworks.
• Demonstrated proficiency in modern development practices such as cloud‑based services, RESTful APIs, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience overseeing full software development lifecycles, including requirements gathering, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, including the ability to interpret data and apply structured problem‑solving methods.
• Understanding of data security principles, secure development practices, and balancing system availability with security requirements.
• Experience coordinating application or system upgrades and managing technology change.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Information Technology or a related field.
• Experience with AI‑enabled development tools, automation frameworks, and/or building solutions using Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI).
• Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud) and best practices around cloud‑native application design.
• Experience applying data modeling, business intelligence, and analytics principles to business‑focused solutions.
• Proven success in architecting or supporting enterprise systems within complex business or academic environments.
• Experience with modern security practices such as identity governance, data loss prevention, secure coding patterns, and zero‑trust architectures.
