Job Description Through personal outreach and significant relationship-building, the Assistant Director role is vital to building and maintaining Newhouse brand recognition among employers in the communications industry. This position is responsible for organizing and creating career fairs and career programming for students to find jobs and internships as well as relationship building with employers. This position provides comprehensive career skills training to students to prepare them for post-graduate success. This position is also a vital component of the college’s alumni relations, providing career transition support to alumni.
Education and Experience | Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of industry and/or higher education experience.
Skills and Knowledge | Experience with social media platforms Knowledge of CSM platforms a plus Familiarity with AI technologies and tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude) and experience with prompt development a plus. Ability to track data and metrics of employer engagement and outcomes. Demonstrated ability to work with and advocate for a diverse student population. Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
Responsibilities Conduct one-on-one career advising for students and Newhouse alumni to assist constituents in achieving career goals; this includes, but not limited to, skills assessment and providing strategic career plan. Provide students and alumni with expert advice and guidance. Stay current with emerging AI tools and leverage them to enhance students’ career readiness, including integrating technology into advising and job search strategies. Oversee Fall and Spring Career Fairs and/or employer engagement events to bring in employers and alumni to recruit Newhouse students. Plan and organize the two major career fairs with possible additional virtual components. Secure venues, negotiate with vendors, arrange catering, manage materials, promote events to students and employers, and other related tasks. Collaborate with employer partners, faculty, and alumni to cultivate and nurture employer relationships that support procurement of full-time and internship opportunities for all Newhouse students. Meet with employers in person or virtually to discuss engagement options whether on campus or virtually. Manage itinerary, create interview schedules, secure room reservations, order catering if needed. Oversee marketing of employer engagements by working with student graphic designers and student social media teams to promote employer visits to students. Collaborate with cross-campus departments on career readiness events and programming. Teach skill based seminars (resume/letter writing, internship search, interviewing, job search, etc.) to students and alumni by providing innovated presentations that teaches and builds a strong professional skill set. Ideate and implement new approaches to career events, programming and tools to increase functionality, efficiency, and overall benefit to Newhouse students.
