General Job Description
This is a supervisory position responsible for assisting in coordinating and administering the operations and programming of the Center for Career and Professional Development at Stephen F. Austin State University. Responsible for coordinating, supervising, and reporting on-campus recruiting and employer, student, and alumni relations activities; and assisting students in their career development and employment search. Responsible for providing oversight of the office and related responsibilities as needed in the director’s absence. Works under general supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Director, Center for Career and Professional Development.
Essential Job Functions
1. Provides individual and group career counseling/advising, coaching students regarding job search strategies and job search skill development using appropriate career assessment instruments. Maintains high professional and ethical standards in career coaching and maintains appropriate documentation of this process.
2. Coordinates career events and job fairs organized by the department. Works with department staff to effectively market events to faculty, students and employers.
3. Advises employers of recruitment services for students and provides comprehensive information about academic programs, available graduates, and employment success of graduates.
4. Assists with post-graduate survey and data compilation for annual follow-up report.
5. Assists with coordinating, marketing, and delivering career-related presentations, programs, and events to the campus community.
6. Collaborates with department staff to organize on-campus and off-campus recruiting and interviewing programs and activities.
7. Conducts employer outreach to increase utilization of department programs and services.
8. Assists with developing departmental learning and development outcomes and tools for collecting data.
9. Assists in compiling annual assessment report.
10. Supervises assigned staff, including student assistants.
11. Stays abreast of national, state, and local hiring practices, employment trends, and other labor related issues.
Non-Essential Job Functions
1. May receive and/or supervise the receipt of payments from students and others for departmentally sponsored activities.
2. Acts on the director’s behalf as needed.
3. Represents the department and university on various committees and at meetings/conferences.
4. Assists with testing and orientation programs as assigned.
5. Coordinates and assists with special projects as assigned.
6. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

2. Knowledge of professional standards, regulations, and ethics.
3. Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, word processing, and presentation software.
4. Skill in public speaking and delivering presentations to individuals and groups.
5. Skill in career counseling.
6. Organizational skills in managing multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining a satisfactory work product.
7. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
8. Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
9. Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
10. Ability to effectively market the programs and services of the department.
11. Ability to provide support for student development with a demonstrable concern for students.
12. Ability to train and supervise others.
13. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
Physical Demands |
Required Education | Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, business, communications, public relations, higher education administration, or a related field is required.
Required Experience and Training | Two years of related experience is required. Experience in career services, student advising, or event planning is required.
Preferred Qualifications | Master’s degree is preferred. Supervisory experience is preferred. Experience in higher education is preferred. Experience using online career services platforms, such as Handshake, is preferred.

This is an IT-sensitive position subject to the Computer and Network Security policy.
