Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Manhattanville Operations, the Assistant Director is a key member of the Public Safety leadership team and is responsible for the day to day operations of all uniformed personnel at the Manhattanville campus.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of professionals consisting of a 1 Captain, 3 Lieutenants, 25 Sergeants; 84 unionized uniformed security officers, and approximately 200 uniformed contract security guards assigned to various locations on and around the Manhattanville campus.
  • The Associate Director performs the duties of the Campus Security Director in the absence of the Director.
  • Directs the strategic planning for programming, operations, delivery of services, training, quality improvement, and productivity of all Public Safety Operational personnel in all areas related to Public Safety Operations on the Manhattanville Campus.
  • Directs and implements strategic plans to promulgate, enhance and improve upon existing policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for the performance of personnel and must provide clear operational directives to all personnel.
  • Take the lead on all matters and concerns regarding work associated with Public Safety in a higher education environment.
  • Attend meetings with School/Department Heads and Administrators throughout the campus, including Academic, Administrative Staff, Faculty, and Facilities personnel and make policy decisions for the Department of Public Safety.
  • Prepare strategic plans to develop, update and implement daily security measures, special long term needs due to unusual events or construction, and collaborate with other departments to plan for special events.
  • Maintain oversight in administering the TWU Collective Bargaining Agreement for Security Officers, including monitoring attendance and overtime and making strategic decisions regarding staffing assignments for officers and supervisors.
  • Interpret the TWU contract and render decisions regarding the proper implementation of the specific language.
  • Conduct step one Grievance Investigations and Hearings and prepare the concluding report.
  • Conduct investigations into reports of misconduct by security personnel, including complaints regarding service, and administers appropriate response, including discipline and recommends termination when appropriate. Conduct interviews for Security Officers, Sergeants, Lieutenants and Managers and makes recommendations to hire.
  • Make decisions regarding, evaluating, promotions and training of security personnel.
  • Provide oversight of subordinates and ensure quality assurance for operations by working, as necessary, on other-than-standard tours of duty.
  • Remain available for emergency response as directed by the Director.
  • Conduct information sessions on security awareness.
  • Performing other duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required. 4-6 years of related professional experience required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to perform in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment and proven skills in a variety of competencies, including strategic planning, organizational analysis, and process development, is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work effectively, tactfully, and equitably with a broad constituency of students, faculty, and staff in a University setting, and work with changing priorities, manage myriad programs and events simultaneously and independently, exercise initiative, and use discretion.
  • Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite. PeopleSoft, Lenel, and Kronos experience is a plus.
  • Must be able to engage in strenuous physical activity, including walking, climbing stairs, carrying equipment and supplies, including boxes and packages over 25 pounds, as well as standing or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Must also be willing and able to perform duty in inclement weather conditions.
  • Must be willing and able to perform duty on weekends, late evenings, and early mornings as directed and as the Department of Public Safety operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
