Job Description Summary:
The Multicultural Student Services Center (MSSC) at The George Washington University seeks a passionate, self-driven, talented, and student-centered leader to serve as the Assistant Director of the Multicultural Student Services Center. Reporting to the Director of the MSSC, the Assistant Director is responsible for providing leadership, advocacy, and programming to support historically underrepresented and excluded students within the university. This role also involves supporting the larger mission of the MSSC through active participation in its initiatives, programs, and services.
The Assistant Director for the Multicultural Student Services Center (MSSC) is essential in furthering the mission of the MSSC at The George Washington University and functions in the role of the Director in their absence. Through this role, the Assistant Director works to promote diversity, nurture belonging, cultivate identity and leadership skills, and actively drive the dismantling of unjust systems, as outlined in the mission of the MSSC.
The Assistant Director also contributes to creating an equitable and liberative community that prepares students for success in an increasingly global society. The individual in this role must have a thorough and exhibited understanding of critical theories and frameworks, which inform their practice and approach. The Assistant Director should understand identity development theories and lead from an intersectional framework.
Position Summary: The Assistant Director of the Multicultural Student Services Center (MSSC) plays a pivotal role in advancing the center’s mission to foster an inclusive and socially just campus environment. This position is responsible for developing educational programming, facilitating staff and faculty educational workshops, leading assessment efforts, and managing key partnerships within the University. The Assistant Director provides direct supervision to MSSC staff and supports the center’s goal of creating transformative learning experiences for students.
Key Responsibilities:Educational Programs & Training Develop and lead educational opportunities for faculty and staff on topics such as inclusive pedagogy, engaging with diverse student populations, and identity-conscious practices. Plan and execute educational programs for students that promote intercultural learning, social justice, and identity development. Facilitate the Breaking Bread series, fostering dialogue and community building across differences.
Resource ManagementAssist the Director with budget management and allocation Oversee the MSSC Prayer & Meditation Room, ensuring it welcoming, accessible, and stocked with relevant materials and supplies. Promote these resources to the student body and integrate them into MSSC programming efforts.
Program Design & Framework DevelopmentDesign a comprehensive programming framework to be used across all MSSC initiatives, ensuring alignment with the center’s mission and learning outcomes. Lead the planning, facilitation, and assessment of an immersive social justice retreat for students.
Assessment & EvaluationDevelop and implement assessment tools for MSSC programs, services, and physical space usage. Analyze data and feedback to inform continuous improvement and strategic planning.
Campus Partnerships & OutreachServe as the primary point of contact for offices, including but not limited to Student Life, CARE Team, CAPS, and the Mount Vernon Campus Collaborate with campus partners to integrate inclusive practices into co-curricular and student support efforts.
Supervision & Team DevelopmentProvide direct supervision to the MSSC Program Coordinator by supporting them in the development of programming and workshops for the campus community Support the professional development of supervisees and contribute to a high-functioning team.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications: | Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: | Master’s degree in Student Development, Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education, Gender Studies, Counseling, or a relevant field preferred. Five or more years of experience working with historically underrepresented and excluded students, prioritizing candidates with experience in university multicultural student affairs and student life, is desired. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong awareness and knowledge of campus issues, demonstrated ability to strategize effective programming, training, student advocacy, and community building. Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds. At least two years of experience supervising professional staff and student employees is desired. Experience supporting and advising student clubs and organizations is desired. Experience designing and delivering programming and training that advance positive identity development and build leadership skills for people who hold multiple historically underrepresented identities is preferred. Demonstrated ability to engage students of diverse identities in intercultural learning and dialogue. Demonstrated ability to perform job responsibilities collaboratively with colleagues and students across departments and disciplines. Experience developing and managing budgets is preferred. Knowledge of student leadership and student development theories and their applications in practice. Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, excellent professional judgment, and the ability to make decisions that align with organizational mission and goals. Demonstrated skills and experience in strategic planning and assessment of programs, services, and/or student learning outcomes.
