Position Summary Information 
Minimum Qualifications  | Bachelor’s Degree. 1-3 years of experience in higher education in a leadership capacity, working with student programming and student leadership development. Demonstrated success in collaboration with other departments and groups, organizational skills, team building, and program development. Ability to work independently. Strong communication skills, including verbal, written, and presentation. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
License/Certification Required  | A valid driver’s license

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  | Transfer Admissions and Engagement cultivates an inclusive environment that elevates the higher education experience by advocating, collaborating, and providing innovative service to recruit, retain, and graduate students. Additionally, Transfer Admissions & Engagement will coordinate programming and services intended to help students integrate into the Appalachian community and improve retention.

This position will provide transitional and engagement support to new and current transfer students to help them successfully integrate into the campus community thus increasing the sense of belonging. This will be met through planned and organized transfer engagement events and programming, co-advisement of the Transfer Student Mentor program, and collaboration with other units across campus to develop the programming that will address needs that are unique to transfer students. This position will supervise the Transition & Engagement Counselor, Graduate Assistant, Transfer Student Mentors and Work-Study students.

Develop, implement, and facilitate programming out of Transfer Admissions & Engagement (on all campuses – Boone, Hickory, and App State Online) relevant to transfer students’ needs to be engaged and develop a sense of belonging. Supervise the Transfer Transition & Engagement Counselor, Graduate Assistant, Transfer Student Mentors, and work-study students. Set and measure expectations and motivate job performance. Oversee the operations of TAE in the Transfer Residential Halls including: Liaison with University Housing staff to ensure TAE is meeting the responsibilities of the Memorandum of Understanding. Create a supportive and engaging environment through the Transfer Student Center in Mountain Laurel Hall. Ensure that the space is meeting the needs of all transfer students. Chair the Transfer Residential Leadership Committee that plans and hosts programming and support for the residents of our transfer halls.  In collaboration with the Transfer Transition & Engagement Counselor: Recruit, select, train, and supervise Transfer Student Mentors (TSMs) and Online Student Mentors (OSMs). Facilitate check-in meetings with mentors multiple times a semester to set and measure expectations and motivate job performance. Manage payroll for the TSMs. Coordinate a training program to equip mentors to perform the functions of their jobs. Assign responsibilities to mentors such as transitional programming (Orientation, T-POP, Welcome to App), event engagement, call campaigns, student outreach, etc. Maintain a schedule of events in which mentors will be utilized to support transfer initiatives on campus Match mentors to students needing outreach through referrals. Follow up with the mentors on outcomes. Assist the Director of Transfer Recruitment and Retention in retention efforts by: Following up with students identified through the New Mountaineer Survey who need additional support or resources. Represent TAE by serving on the Early Intervention Committee Communicate with new and current transfer students through email newsletters (Transfer Scoop & Online Scoop), social media, Engage, Scala, and other mediums to ensure students are fully aware of the university’s resources and events, TAE, and student success strategies. Create and monitor a virtual community for students in our App State Online programs. Serve as the advisor for Tau Sigma, the transfer student honor society. Identify qualified students for invitation, extend invitations and market the honor society, plan and oversee the induction ceremony, and work with student leaders to offer engagement events for members. Help plan, promote, and host transitional events to ensure that the transfer student experience meets the unique needs of transfer students, i.e. Transfer Pre-Orientation Program (T-POP), Transfer Orientation, and Welcome to App events. Work collaboratively with Student Affairs and Academic Affair units to meet the needs of transfer students, co-program, and secure representation at certain events. Serve as a liaison to other departments within Enrollment Management to secure support and resources needed to successfully transition students to campus. Serve on office and campus-wide committees as deemed appropriate for this position. Support Enrollment Management by working events like Open House, Commencement, etc. Complete other duties as assigned.

Normal operating hours of the University are Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm. This position requires a variable schedule, including evening and weekend work during the fall and spring semesters. Would be expected to drive a van during events, so a valid driver’s license is required.
