Job Summary  | Bowdoin Student Activities is a student-focused office that fosters and supports the co-curricular experience at the College. The Student Activities team supports students in their leadership of clubs, events, ideas, and programs, meeting the extra-curricular needs of an ever-changing student body with the understanding that students learn by doing and having fun. The Office also produces programming that is vibrant and diverse, building community and enhancing the student experience.

The Assistant Director works directly with students and must be excited about helping students implement a wide range of programming initiatives. The person in this job will advise a range of student groups including club sports, multicultural groups, the first-year class council, and many more. The Assistant Director is also responsible for event planning and oversees programming for students during the first six weeks of classes and the end of semester acapella shows. They will manage logistics for campus wide concerts and be point person day-of-show.

The Assistant Director will be expected to think strategically about meeting student needs through daytime and nighttime programming. They will work with office staff to develop and implement student leadership training. The Assistant Director is closely involved with both student music and art productions, including overseeing the band practice rooms and the recording studio. They will supervise the student curators who coordinate student, alumni, and community member art shows in the Smith Union Galleries, as well as the team of student graphic designers. Additionally, they will serve as the main point person for all offerings in Jack Magee’s Pub, including trivia nights, student concerts, and more.

Another important aspect of this position is direct oversight of the on-campus craft center, which includes working with student managers and instructors to coordinate events, classes, and programs such as weekly pottery studio open hours; recruiting craft center members and managing the membership list; and ensuring the center is compliant with safety requirements.

The hiring range for this position is expected to be: $50,500- 53,500 (10 month position).

Education/Skills Requirements  |
A Bachelor’s degree is required The ability to exercise sound judgment, set priorities and solve problems independently Demonstrated ability to motivate and collaborate with a wide range student led groups including affinity groups, dance groups, and any new groups that may be formed during the year Excellent verbal and written communication skills Creativity in solving problems and designing new initiatives to enhance student life. Comfortable in high stress situations. Willingness to stand in front of a crowd and give direction Demonstrated ability to work well with a diverse student body in culturally competent ways, combined with a demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents  | Entry-level position, 0-3 years experience. Experience in student activities or a similar collegiate setting, planning small and large scale campus events, is preferred. Desire to work in a fast-paced, student-centered and collaborative office. Event planning and logistics management for various types of student programming. Supervisory skills to oversee student curators, graphic designers, craft center managers, and teachers. Commitment to valuing diversity and creating an inclusive working environment. Strong work ethic and punctuality in meeting individual, departmental, and college goals. Ability to work effectively with others and contribute to a positive working environment.

Standard Work Days and Hours  | This is a full-time, academic year position, working 40 hours/43 weeks, (0.83FTE) with occasional evening or weekends as required. Administrative hours for this role are Monday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.. This position allows the  pursuit of other activities during the months of June and July.
