Job Summary
The Department of Biology is seeking to hire a full-time Assistant Director of Teaching Laboratories. Individuals will assist in the development and delivery of our introductory majors and non-majors Biology lab courses. These labs teach foundational techniques in general biology ranging in content from cells to ecosystems. Successful applicants will teach and oversee multiple sections of the labs throughout the academic year. The position will be responsible for direct supervision and evaluation of students in the laboratory and will work with faculty to plan and implement teaching labs and assist in educational assessment. This position is also responsible for the training and oversight of a contingent of graduate teaching assistants that help deliver these labs. The position will be involved in all aspects of delivery of our teaching labs including everyday teaching functions, prepping of materials, screening of protocols, development of educational content, delivery of labs, oversight of teaching assistants, grading of student assignments, and providing academic help to ensure student success. This position will work closely with teaching faculty, the Director of Teaching Laboratory Services, and will report to the Assistant Department Head.
Successful candidate will be part of a multi-person team involved in the development and delivery of our undergraduate introductory Biology laboratories. The position will have direct contact with students in the labs and will be responsible for planning and prep of a variety of general biology laboratories. The successful candidate will work closely with teaching faculty, the Assistant Department Head and the Director of Teaching Services to develop and deliver the laboratory content, as well as develop associated course rubrics and resources aimed at helping students develop their technical skills.
Essential Functions
- Work with prep staff in the planning and preparation of undergraduate general Biology labs
- Screen of the lab materials and protocols and daily preparation of the labs
- Perform academic functions such as developing pre-labs, grading, assessing student work and tutoring students
- Oversee and trains a contingent of graduate teaching assistants associated with these labs
- Work closely with students in the labs and plan and prep of a variety of general biology laboratories
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of a Master's Degree in Biological Science (or related field), or its equivalent or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
- Experience working in a laboratory setting.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Strong collaboration skills; ability to work well collaboratively and independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching experience.
- 2 years of laboratory experience in a research, clinical or educational lab environment.

Additional Information
This position is classified as Exempt, grade I. Compensation for this grade ranges from $41,120 - $61,680 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
