Position Description
Advertised Job Summary | Under limited supervision and reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Assistant Vice President for Advancement Services (AVP): Provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for advancement services across the University of South Carolina system. Responsible for guiding the university’s fundraising infrastructure, including data and information systems, analytics and client solutions, prospect strategy, revenue and compliance, and technical resources. Ensures the integrity, security, and optimization of advancement systems and processes to support fundraising success, donor stewardship, and alumni engagement. As a key member of the Development Leadership Team, the AVP collaborates with university partners, divisional leaders, and external stakeholders to align advancement services with institutional priorities. Serves as the primary liaison to the Division of Information Technology and the university’s alumni data steward, leading change management efforts, system enhancements, and continuous improvement initiatives to advance the university’s philanthropic mission.
Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience | Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and at least 10 years of job related experience, including some prior management experience. Typically reports to an Associate VP or VP.
Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials |
Preferred Qualifications | Prior experience in working in a complex development model. Familiarity with constituent donor databases and system conversion experience are preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities | Comprehensive knowledge of business analyst skills in principles and methods of planning and managing operational fundraising resources and programs. Operational development experience in non-profit or higher education and/or hybrid development model. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with faculty, alumni, donors, students, volunteers and the general public. Outstanding oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to travel to regional campuses and to conferences for continual professional development, work evenings and weekends, as required. Strong track record of database experience with technical knowledge and understanding of systems and processes. Prior experience in executing strategic operational and resource plans to improve program efficiencies, upgrades and enhancements. Ability to maintain confidential information. Provides management and oversight to Analytics and Client Solutions, Research & Prospect Strategy, Revenue and Compliance, and Information Systems & Technology teams ensuring the effective use of technical resources in support of the Division and overall university system.
Develops and maintains a comprehensive strategic plan for assigned teams to support Division mission, vision, and values, in addition to university priorities.
Oversees and safeguards data integrity, system security, and reporting accuracy. Ensures timely and accurate entry of gift and demographic data, while managing system upgrades and optimizing usage for program efficiency. Supports fundraising success by ensuring that moves management processes and prospect identification occur regularly in collaboration with fundraisers.
Manages budgeting and resource allocation for assigned areas, ensuring fiscal responsibility, cost-effective operations, and alignment of financial resources with strategic priorities.
Monitors program performance and provides training, coaching, and mentoring to promote staff professional development and success. Guides system innovations and implements new technologies to meet evolving division needs.
Collaborates closely with Division leaders, directors of development, and schools and colleges to deliver exceptional customer service and ensure alignment with university advancement strategies.

Oversees fundraising program efficiency and capacity by developing and implementing data management practices aligned with business needs. Provides leadership and guidance in compiling private giving reports for Division leaders, the Board of Trustees, and campus and college partnership boards. Prepares and delivers industry-standard reporting, such as VSE and CASE reports.
Oversees gift receipting operations to ensure production benchmarks are met and processes comply with IRS regulations and CASE standards. Provides leadership and guidance in preparing documentation to support internal and external audits for the USC Educational Foundation, USC Development Foundation, Business Partnership Foundation, Alumni Association, and the Gamecock Club.
Ensures the timely and accurate recording of gifts across all University Foundations and with the State Treasurer, maintaining the highest standards of accountability, compliance, and donor stewardship

Collaborates with the Vice President of Development and other Division leaders to design and implement a comprehensive Division strategic plan that supports all advancement programs, addressing the systematic and technical needs of fundraising, development priorities, and alumni engagement.
Leads fiscal year goal setting for Advancement Services and fundraising support functions, ensuring alignment with university advancement priorities. Monitors key performance metrics daily to track progress, identify trends, and support data-driven decision-making.
Develops dashboard solutions to provide accurate, real-time data to fundraisers, deans, and university partners. Evaluates and implements new systems and technologies to strengthen fundraising effectiveness and operational efficiency.
Oversees quality assurance testing for new functionality, system enhancements, and change requests to ensure accuracy, reliability, and user satisfaction. Actively engages Division leaders and development partners to align strategies and resources with the evolving needs of fundraising and alumni initiatives.
Oversees proactive and reactive research activities, prospect referrals, and portfolio management for the Division of Development.

Directs business analysis and project consultation for the design, development, and implementation of fundraising software and systems, including oversight of database conversions across all university campuses.
Facilitates meetings with programmers, staff, and DoIT partners to enhance database functionality. Serves as the primary liaison with DoIT to address and resolve system discrepancies, variances, and functionality issues. Addresses issues arising around the use of AI and securing University data.
Ensures computer systems and hardware meet all University and industry benchmarking standards. Ensures team’s customizations are documented and follow coding protocols and versioning controls. All web pages should adhere to ADA guidelines and pass all PCI security tests.

Provides strategic leadership and oversight of all data management processes and policies, serving as the primary Data Steward for alumni records for the USC system. Collaborates with Central IT and Foundations to maintain data agreements and ensure vendor compliance.
Leads change management efforts by directing the development of training, documentation, and communication of both business and system processes. Regularly updates and refines policies and procedures for Revenue and Compliance, Analytics and Client Solutions, Information Systems & Technology, and Research & Prospect Strategy to ensure alignment with Division goals.
Designs and oversees a comprehensive training curriculum to support fundraising priorities, ensuring content is continuously evaluated and adapted to meet evolving needs. Communicates process and policy changes through presentations to fundraising programs and divisional stakeholders.
Actively participates in committees and staff meetings to represent advancement services and contribute to the success of university-wide initiatives. Approves all technology purchases for the Division of Development.
