 Position Description 
Advertised Job Summary  | Under limited supervision and reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President for Development and Campaign Director (Sr Associate VP), the Assistant Vice President for Health Sciences Development (AVP) will be responsible for the execution, management, and oversight for fundraising priorities for several schools and colleges. The AVP will build a prospect portfolio and solicit major and principal gifts in support of those priorities. Responsibilities include the management of professional and administrative development staff in planning, implementing, coordinating, and administering comprehensive development programs with an emphasis on major gifts. Supports the Sr Associate VP in developing, aligning, and executing the strategic priorities of the University. Works with deans, department chairs, faculty, alumni, and volunteers in fundraising efforts to secure major gifts. This position also serves on the USC Development Leadership Team.
Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience  | Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and at least 10 years of job related experience, including some prior management experience. Typically reports to an Associate VP or VP.
Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials  |
Preferred Qualifications  | Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of major and principal gifts development experience, preferably in higher education. Graduate degree is an advantage.  Prior experience in working in a complex development model is helpful. Have effective computer experience including database operation and word processing.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities  | Comprehensive knowledge of principles and methods of development and overseeing diverse fundraising programs.  Development or health sciences fundraising experience in higher education or related fundraising capacity. Experience in leading high performing teams. Experience in establishing measurable goals to increase fundraising results that are both aspirational and achievable. Thorough knowledge of legal and tax issues as they relate to philanthropic support; knowledge of principles, procedures and objectives pertaining to gift planning from private sources. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with faculty, alumni, donors, students, volunteers, businesses and the general public. Ability to travel, work evenings and weekends, as required.  Strongly prefer knowledge of University program goals and objectives.  Ability to relate fundraising programs to University goals and objectives. Prior experience in executing strategic donor events hosted by leadership/faculty for a select set of donor prospects. Supervisory experience in hiring, managing, training and mentoring development directors and administrative staff are required.  Has experience in guiding the Development staff as it continues to grow and mature as a program that combines the best elements of the art and science of fundraising practice.  Must have reliable means of transportation.
