Athletic Academic Advisor (2 positions) Full Description

The Student-Athlete Resource Center Department at San José State University supports the University's academic mission and collaboratively works with the campus community to enhance student success. Reporting to the Managing Director of the Student-Athlete Resource Center (SARC), the Athletic Academic Advisor provides academic coaching, advising, analysis, and assessment to student-athletes.
The advisor also supports students in helping them understand California State University (CSU) and San José State University (SJSU) requirements relating to their degree requirements and Mountain West Athletic Conference and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletic requirements. The Athletic Academic Advisor develops, coordinates, implements, and assesses academic support and other retention services and programs for student-athletes, serves as a liaison to coaching staff of assigned teams, and assists with the development and monitoring of academic support programs of the Gadway and YUH Academic Centers.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide holistic academic coaching and support to a cohort of student-athletes using an asset-based, strengths-based case management approach.
  • Monitor academic progress by leveraging early support systems and implementing timely interventions to support student needs.
  • Develop and implement a student communication plan aligned with university policies, deadlines, events, and semester-specific supports.
  • Monitor student-athletes' academic progress toward degree, including initial and continuous NCAA and Mountain West Conference eligibility.
  • Provide coaching to students on course and major selection, and update student-athlete data on official records.
  • Collaborate with Undergraduate Admissions and the Academic Eligibility Coordinator to monitor continuous eligibility to practice and compete.
  • Lead programming efforts and materials supporting students' transition to SJSU, covering time management, study skills, and effective communication with instructors.
  • Prepare and submit regular reports on the progress and status of SARC programming.
  • Assist with development and evaluation of Gadway Academic Center policies and procedures, applying SJSU, CSU System, state, federal, and NCAA requirements.
  • Serve as liaison to coaching staff and Department of Athletics staff to support student-athlete academic performance.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of NCAA policies and procedures related to academic support.
  • Knowledge of student development theories and principles, retention strategies, and program development.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of individual and group behavior, and interviewing/connecting techniques for holistic academic student support.
  • Knowledge of FERPA and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with individuals and groups.
  • Ability to develop and deliver high-quality programming to support student success.
  • Ability to recognize and refer students to appropriate student services and resources in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Required Qualifications
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience.
  • A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Social Work, Education, or a directly related field.
  • Demonstrated NCAA knowledge and work experience in academic support of student-athletes and athletic academic eligibility.
  • Strong customer service background in a student-athlete-focused educational setting with collegiate coaches, faculty, and staff.
  • Work experience in CSU/SJSU General Education and overall undergraduate degree requirements.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft and/or customer service-based technology systems.
Compensation
Classification: Student Services Professional III. Anticipated Hiring Salary: up to $5,667/month. CSU Salary Range: $5,540/month - $7,893/month.
