Audio Visual Production Supervisor Full Description

JOB SUMMARY
The Department of Student Union and Event Services is seeking a full-time Audio Visual Production Supervisor.

Audio Visual and Technology Services, part of Student Union and Event Services, facilitates approximately 6,000 annual reservations utilizing AV equipment across 17 conference rooms, a theater, a multipurpose event space, and two ballrooms. Of these, approximately 600 events require dedicated technical support. The department operates with a team of 18 student technicians who provide technical support and event production services, along with a student administrative assistant who manages scheduling and report tracking. Hours of operation are typically 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. during the semester and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during academic breaks.
Under the direction of the Audio Visual and Technology Services Manager, the Audio Visual Production Supervisor provides professional AV support for key institutional events, oversees technical operations for event production, trains and develops student technical staff, and maintains AV systems and services. This position plays a critical role in ensuring customer satisfaction by delivering high standards of technical support and maintaining the university’s reputation for professional, reliable services. Success will be measured by event outcomes, reduced disruptions, and improved student staff competency.
The role also includes developing and implementing structured training programs to accelerate student learning and reduce performance gaps. 
The Audio Visual Production Supervisor will be hired at either the Audio Visual Specialist [P3] classification or the Audio Visual Technician 1 [P4] classification, depending on the incumbent's experience, skills, abilities, and training as determined by the University. The Audio Visual Specialist is an early to mid - career professional working under more direct supervision, focusing on routine AV installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and technical projects. In contrast, the Audio Visual Technician 1 performs similar duties with greater independence, tackles more complex technical challenges, evaluates technology solutions, and leads more advanced projects. 
DUTIES AND RESPOSIBILITIES
  1. Provides technical event support, including the setup, operation, and troubleshooting of AV and IT equipment, ensuring events meet or exceed customer expectations.
  2. Assists in the management and maintenance of AV systems, ensuring operational readiness and reliability.
  3. Performs routine maintenance and repair of AV equipment, and assists with the installation, modification, and integration of AV systems.
  4. Supervises AV student staff, including hiring, onboarding, training, development, scheduling, and performance evaluation.
  5. Develops and implements structured training programs that simulate troubleshooting scenarios to accelerate student proficiency and reduce deficiencies.
  6. Serves as the functional applications administrator for departmental systems such as EMS, Social Tables, 7PointOps, and Nexus, providing support as needed.
  7. Stays current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and user needs, recommending and implementing improvements in collaboration with the AV and Technology Services Manager.
  8. Contributes to long-term strategic initiatives and special projects within the Division of Student Life and Enrollment.
  9. Maintains active involvement in relevant industry organizations and certifications (e.g., AVIXA, Extron).
  10. Performs related duties to support the mission and goals of the Student Union and the division.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
At the Audio Visual Specialist [P3] classification
  • Associate degree and two years of professional AV technology experience OR bachelor’s degree OR four years of professional AV technology experience  
At the Audio Visual Technician 1 [P4] classification:
  • Associate degree and four years of professional AV technology experience OR bachelor's degree and two years of professional AV technology experience OR six years of professional AV technology experience. 
  • Demonstrated experience supervising or leading a project or team, with accountability for the work of others.
Both classifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with video conferencing technology and platforms (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Cisco WebEx).
  • Experience in audio technology, including setup and operation of digital mixing consoles and sound systems, troubleshooting feedback issues, and managing wireless microphone frequencies.
  • Experience in video technology, including setup and operation of projectors, display monitors, video matrix switchers, and troubleshooting HDCP & EDID issues.
  • Written and verbal communication skills with a proven record of explaining technical concepts to non-technical users.
  • Experience working independently, proactively taking initiative, and effectively resolving problems.
  • Interpersonal skills with experience working effectively with diverse populations and fostering an inclusive environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated experience supervising or mentoring student staff in a customer service or technical role.
  • Active certifications from AVIXA, Extron, or similar organizations.
  • Experience with AV control systems (e.g., Extron, Q-SYS, Biamp, etc.).
  • Two years of professional experience in a college/university setting.
  • Background in using event management software, such as EMS.
  • Active membership or involvement in professional organizations related to AV or event technology.
  • Experience designing and delivering effective staff training programs.
  • Experience managing or coordinating AV services for a high-volume event environment.

This appointment requires occasional irregular hours, including nights and weekends and the ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
