College Visit Program Coordinator
Location: Boone, North Carolina
Department: Office of Rural Promise (GEAR UP)
Position Summary
The College Visit Program Coordinator serves as a liaison between Appalachian GEAR UP and its LEA (school district) partnerships, providing college access programming that meets the goals of the NC Appalachian GEAR UP Partnership grants. The role requires a strong foundation in college access and readiness best practices and serves as an educator to GEAR UP students, working with individual school districts to identify and meet their needs.
College Access Programs
- Serve as a content expert on the college enrollment process
- Develop, implement, and evaluate college access programs across GEAR UP districts, including summer camps, campus visits, and bus tours
- Serve 2,000-3,000 students per semester by coordinating campus visits to Appalachian State University, Lenoir Rhyne University, Western Carolina University, and partner colleges
- Coordinate 5-10 large-group student field trips to college campuses across NC
- Advocate for a college-going culture by ensuring teachers and staff provide college enrollment resources
- Adapt the program to changing needs, environments, and data
Partnership Development
- Build and sustain effective partnerships with school staff, administrators, and teachers so GEAR UP students receive needed opportunities and resources
- Meet regularly with partners to support program rollout and student participation
- Support school staff in embedding program services into classrooms, clubs, and other school structures
- Share resources with IHE partners to strengthen campus visits across the western NC region
Compliance
Provide guidance and support to partners to ensure programmatic, federal, state, and institutional compliance. Maintain records of programmatic, administrative, and financial activities, and ensure consistent implementation of program policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, or a closely related field
- 4 years of experience with program coordination and/or curriculum development
- Superior organizational, communication, and leadership skills
- Track record of innovative thinking and initiative
- Experience planning events and building partnerships across organizations, including faculty, universities, and community colleges
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Education, Social Work, or a closely related field
- Federal grant and/or compliance experience
- Experience in a similar role in another college access program
- Experience managing large-scale projects
Position Details
- Full-Time, Staff/Non-Faculty position, 12 months per year
- Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with some nights and weekends for student programming
- 40 hours per week
- Suggested Salary Range: $62,000-$64,000
