Communications and Social Media Specialist Full Description

Job Summary

The Communications & Digital Media Specialist supports the strategy and execution of internal and external communications for the LeBow College of Business and Goodwin College of Professional Studies. This role creates and manages compelling, brand-aligned content across digital, social and marketing channels—telling the stories of students, faculty, alumni, and programs while strengthening engagement with audiences.

Working collaboratively with academic, marketing, and creative teams, the specialist oversees social media strategy, produces high-quality multimedia content, and uses data and best practices to continuously optimize reach, reputation and impact.   

Essential Functions

  • Work closely with LeBow/Goodwin academic, administrative, communications, marketing and creative teams on an editorial calendar and also mine, write, refine, produce, edit and disseminate engaging content.
    • Content will include news stories, student/alumni profiles, research articles/white papers, infographics, video, photo, event pages and more.
    • Content will be featured across various communication channels, including websites, email, newsletters, marketing campaigns, print collateral and social media channels. 
  • Oversee the suite of social media accounts for the LeBow College of Business and Goodwin College of Professional Studies, creating a strategy that adheres to their brand identity and implements best practices/trends, developing content, and focusing on community engagement/management. 
  • Work closely with the Art Director to develop brand-relevant visual shot lists for University events and marketing opportunities, shoot high-quality video and photo content to showcase the LeBow experience, collaborate with professional and student freelancers to relay brand vision, and edit and archive assets. Share assets with communications and creative teams and other University administrators for use in communications outlets. 
  • Conduct interview and b-roll shoots, leading the full process including set up, lighting, audio recording, filming, subject research, moderating, gathering additional assets, editing, and publishing to communications channels like websites, social media, e-newsletters and more. 
  • Maintain a comprehensive social media content calendar to keep track of upcoming important dates and events, content requests, the balance of content across departments and social copy/imagery.
  • Use the calendar as an archive of monthly activity. 
  • Collaborate with marketing team on paid digital media tactics, contributing to strategy, shooting video and photo assets, creating video ads, and researching best content practices.
  • Provide strategic communications and social media guidance to internal and external stakeholders (e.g., dean, program administrators, directors, faculty, staff, students, alumni and industry partners) to extend LeBow and Goodwin’s reach and audience. 
  • Manage social media guidelines, policies and best practices to ensure College channels (and other units’ social channels within the Colleges) are compliant with University protocols. 
  • Monitor channel-specific metrics in the form of a monthly report, with the objective of maximizing organic reach and engagement and analyzing the efficacy of campaigns. Use metrics to inform strategy and implement changes that improve the impact of social media initiatives. 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Communications, journalism, digital marketing, public relations or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in PR/strategic communications and/or social media management.
  • Experience using social media management/monitoring tools (e.g., Sprout Social, Hootsuite).
  • Exercises sound judgment consistently; manages LeBow and Goodwin reputation online responsibly and handles sensitive and confidential information with appropriate discretion.
  • Demonstrated excellence in AP style writing and editing, with solid knowledge of digital content development (in all formats), optimization and distribution; writing must demonstrate attention to brand strategy, audience, tone, nuance and detail.
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines consistently, particularly those requiring very quick turnaround.
  • Solid photography skills, with the ability to take and edit high-quality photos using graphic design application or software such as Photoshop.
  • Video production skills, including experience in the conceptualization, storyboarding, filming, and editing of video content for various marketing tactics.
  • Superior communication and collaboration skills and ability to work effectively with people from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Tech-savvy, well-versed and comfortable navigating existing and emerging technology, digital platforms and applications.
  • Ability to think critically and analytically.
  • Organized, self-directed and able to operate both independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to occasionally work during non-standard business hours and attend College events sometimes held during evenings/weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher education marketing and communications experience. 
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and strategies to drive engagement and grow/increase presence across platforms. 
  • Familiarity managing an online community, including comment moderation and tactics to promote positive engagement with a brand.
  • Experience in following work processes between various functional units, including, but not limited to, marketing, creative services and academic units.

Additional Information
This position is classified as Exempt, grade J. Compensation for this grade ranges from $47,490.00 - $71,230.00 per year. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
