About the Department:Mason Community Arts Academy serves as the community arts education branch for the College of Visual and Performing Arts offering year-round classes and lessons, summer programs, and outreach programs in Theater, Music, Visual Art, Film & Video, and Professional Development.
About the Position:The Coordinator of Music Programs & Outreach works closely with other members of the Mason Community Arts Academy (MCAA) staff in providing assistance with day-to-day operations, especially in the areas of administrative support for MCAA Music programs, the Instruments in the Attic outreach program, and other community outreach engagement. This position may also serve in an instructional capacity (private music instruction, chamber music conducting) for year-round classes not to exceed 8 hours a week.
Responsibilities:Coordinates all aspects of the Mason Community Arts Academy’s Instruments in the Attic (IiA) flagship music outreach program from start to finish, including:Instrument donation receiving and acknowledgment;Tracking instrument inventory;Condition assessment;Arranging instrument repairs;Identifying instrument loan-out needs to school programs and individuals; andOverseeing instrument pick-up/delivery.Collaborates with MCAA Marketing & Communications Coordinator to creatively and effectively tell the IiA story and its impact on music education locally, nationally, and internationally;Takes the lead as an Academy and IiA representative at events, seminars, and conferences;Develops related and/or other music outreach initiatives under the guidance of MCAA Executive Director;Assists MCAA Private Music Instruction (PMI) Coordinator with new student inquiries throughout the year;Communicates with instructors and students to schedule trial lessons;Provides post trial lesson follow up to secure full semester registrations;Recommends group class options to new inquiries when appropriate;Manages declined/overdue payments related to customer payment plans;Assists the PMI team with returning student registration processing during peak semester start times;Collaborates with the PMI team to review and improve PMI management systems and workflows;Assists with PMI music recital event management;Assists MCAA Director of Programs and MCAA staff with administrative and educational support for the Academy’s robust lineup of summer music camps;Collaborates with Assistant Coordinator of Programs and Operations to manage music camps on-site on the George Mason campus, and provides support to summer music programs and ensembles as needed;Provides quality Instruction for MCAA private music lessons and year round music classes or ensembles, as needed, not to exceed 8 hours per week. Explores and develops new music ensemble programs for the Academy and/or the community; andAssists with other administrative duties as needed, including office coverage, program registration assistance, board meeting representation, and customer relations management.
Required Qualifications:B.M. or B.A. in Music (or equivalent combination of education and experience);Excellent organization and communication skills providing effective support for program development and implementation, scheduling and student retention, outreach initiatives, and special events;Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word; andDemonstrate strong teaching skills in music, in the areas of performance and chamber music coaching.
Preferred Qualifications:Master’s degree in related field;Master’s or Doctoral Music related degree;Typically five years of previous administrative experience with an arts organization;Prior teaching experience in performance skills and/or band/orchestra conducting/chamber music direction;Experience in conducting large ensembles; andPrior experience and facility with ActiveNet Registration System.
