Job Summary | The International Faculty and Staff Liaison (IFSL) serves as a central resource, advocate, and advisor for international faculty, researchers, and staff at the University of Utah. The IFSL plays a pivotal role in supporting the academic, professional, and personal success of international employees throughout their affiliation with the university. While this position does not provide visa or legal services, it collaborates closely with relevant offices such as the Office of General Counsel (OGC) and International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) to ensure a smooth and well-supported experience for international hires.
Responsibilities
1. Faculty Onboarding & Orientation Provide customized onboarding services to international faculty and scholars, including orientation sessions and one-on-one consultations. Develop and disseminate comprehensive guides and host workshops on key topics such as: Immigration basics (in coordination with OGC/ISSS) Local housing Payroll and taxes Health insurance and medical systems Cultural adaptation and local community life
2. Connection with University Resources Serve as a knowledgeable connector to university-wide resources, including: Immigration advising (via OGC and ISSS) Benefits and HR services Academic support services Campus and community engagement opportunities Advise faculty supervisors and departments on best practices when supporting international employees.
3. Institutional Navigation & Advocacy Act as a liaison between international employees and central administrative offices (e.g., HR, Office for Faculty, OGC) to assist in resolving institutional or procedural challenges. Maintain regular communication with key stakeholders to advocate for inclusive policies and streamlined processes. Offer consistent, reliable support to both faculty and university administrators navigating cross-cultural or structural complexities.
4. Scholar Engagement & Retention Design and implement programs that promote engagement, belonging, and professional growth, such as: Networking events and peer meetups Cultural celebrations and university welcome events Recognition initiatives to highlight international scholars’ contributions Support the holistic well-being of scholars and their families, including referrals to campus and community services.
5. Data Collection & Reporting Track and maintain accurate data on international faculty and scholars, including: Demographic and programmatic data Engagement and satisfaction metrics Service utilization and outcomes Generate regular reports to support strategic planning and continuous improvement of international support services.

Minimum Qualifications | Bachelor’s degree in Education, Communication, or a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Two years related experience; an in-depth knowledge of the specialty area as well as federal-state laws and regulations governing their procedures; and demonstrated organizational, communication and human relation skills required. Related experience includes: instructional design, teaching, instructional video/multi-media production, public speaking, compositional writing, and computer operation.
