Position Summary Information
Minimum Qualifications | A bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or a related field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of skills, education and experience. Excellent written communication skills, including grammar, spelling and punctuation.
License/Certification Required |
Essential Job Functions | Copy edit a variety of internal and external university communications — from news releases and remarks, to website content and App State points of pride — for grammar, spelling, punctuation, consistency, clarity and formatting.
Ensure that university communications adhere to the guidelines of both the Associated Press Stylebook and in-house style rules.
Fact-check university communications — names, titles, dates, locations, figures, etc. — to ensure the copy is accurate.
Research and write engaging copy to be used across a wide variety of university communication channels, including news stories and releases, websites, social media, print publications, advertisements, etc.
Assist in keeping the university’s Writing Style Guide and UComm Writing Team resource materials up to date.
Collaborate with the communications liaisons of App State’s various campus units to gather, research and fact-check information included in university communications.
Other duties, projects and special assignments as required.
Preferred Qualifications | Superior attention to detail. Strong fact-checking and research skills. Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Word, and familiarity with content management systems. Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills. Good organizational and time management skills. Familiarity with writing style guides, particularly the Associated Press Stylebook. Familiarity with generative AI tools and AI prompt engineering. 1-2 years of copy editing experience. Bilingual communication skills, particularly in English and Spanish, are a plus.
