Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable.

This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor. The Position  | Under the direction of the Dean of Student Development and Matriculation and the Department of General Counseling & Personal Growth, applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Counselor (Tenure-Track). The Counselor is responsible for providing general in-person and online counseling services, as well as program coordination. This is a 40-hour work week (30 on campus & 10 off-campus), Monday through Friday, 10-month assignment with an estimated start in January 2026.

Major Responsibilities  | Assist City College’s diverse student population with the successful transfer, personal and career counseling, and educational goal completion. When needed, serve as program coordinator (implementation, evaluation, budgeting) for a counseling retention program. Provide counseling services to students of diverse backgrounds regarding transfer, degree, and career technical education program planning, career decisions, goal clarification, and personal life management. Provide information and guidance to students, faculty, staff, and the community to ensure the appropriate and successful transition of students to four-year colleges and universities, and provide the necessary support. Provide campus in-reach and community outreach through information, guidance, and counseling to diverse student and staff populations to assure appropriate transfer of high school students into community colleges or adult centers, and transition of community college and adult students into four-year institutions or into careers. Facilitate student success, guided pathways, equity, and pre-enrollment services to students. Perform educational counseling, administer and interpret appropriate assessment instruments to prospective students; refer students to support services and faculty to further assist them in determining appropriate educational goals. Inform students about college procedures, catalog use, regulations, fees, resources, special programs, multiple measures, and Math and English options based on Milestones. Assist students with the development of abbreviated and comprehensive education plans. Assist students in finding appropriate college and community resources to resolve problems, and crises, which interfere with their success as students. Provide counseling services for probationary and disqualified students; address and identify student learning problems in cooperation with the instructional programs and services. Provide counseling services to special program students including students on financial aid, international students, veterans, students with disabilities, and students in various retention programs. Assist with the ongoing planning and implementation of the college’s Integration efforts, Success Equity and Achievement Program, and Guided Pathways to name a few. Participate in the evaluation of institutional practices and programs as they affect students; plan and conduct relevant research in areas such as academic skill levels, student attrition, and follow-up transfer. Teach Personal Growth courses, conduct orientations and workshops for students. Participation in campus-wide and district committees. Maintain cooperative work relationships across campus and departments.
Qualifications  | 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent  
(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
Desired Qualifications  | 
Knowledge: General knowledge of the California Education Code as it pertains to the position. Counseling techniques, both individually and group, in a higher education setting. Principles and practices of counseling within a community college environment. Requirements for various degree programs. Research techniques. District policies and procedures as they relate to the college and the position. Technology and software required to meet the evolving demands of this position. Tests and their use and interpretation for career and educational counseling. Knowledge and/or experience with the California Community College Chancellor’s office VAR reporting system.  
Skills and Abilities:Demonstrated knowledge and experience in using culturally relevant counseling strategies to provide academic, career, and personal counseling services to students from special populations. This may include the initial intake interview, verification of program participation, assessing program eligibility, creating educational plans, providing case management, individual counseling, and leading group presentations. Multilingual in English and 1) Spanish, 2) Arabic 3) Farsi, or Other Languages. Teach and facilitate individual and group sessions. Analyze a situation correctly and adopt an effective course of action. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Establish effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the business community. Make persuasive and articulate presentations before groups. Coordination, implementation, budgeting, and evaluation of retention and/or student success programs.
Training and Experience:Demonstrated evidence of knowledge, training, and experience that would indicate sensitivity, understanding, and ability to work with diverse community college populations, including those with diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Demonstrated evidence of knowledge and ability to identify students experiencing academic difficulties including monitoring, evaluating progress, and increasing retention. Evidence of experience in providing information about campus-based programs such as DSPS, EOPS, Umoja, Puente, City Scholars, HUBU, MESA, Undocumented Resource Center, AAPI, Credit for Prior Learning, Veterans, Promise, Articulation, Student Employment and Career Services. Expertise in the use and interpretation of career assessment tools, creating new interventions, models, or theories for career counseling. Experience in a leadership role; coordinating, planning, implementing, and evaluating a student support program. Demonstrated training and experience with the impact of trauma on behavior and development, and interventions and approaches that support student success.
