About our Team
Cell Press is looking for a future leader to help us take iScience, an exciting broad scope open access journal publishing in the Life, Health, Physical, Earth and Social Sciences, to the next level. 

We are seeking to add a dynamic and enthusiastic Deputy Editor who shares our vision for bringing interdisciplinary communities together, and for helping scientists publish their work in a straightforward and timely way. 
 
About the Role  
The Deputy Editor will be part of iScience’s editorial leadership team, working closely together with the leadership team to ensure that iScience delivers on its mission and meets its aims. The role requires occasional travel to conferences and institutes, and it involves people management. The role can be based out of one of our offices in Cambridge, Massachusetts; London; Amsterdam; Beijing; and Shanghai. Remote work from home within proximity to one of our offices is also possible. Responsibilities  
  • Working with the Executive Editor to manage an expanding team and deliver high-quality editorial service to authors 
  • Managing and mentoring members of the iScience editorial team, and deputizing for the Editor-in-Chief when needed. 
  • Directly managing a group of editors in the Earth and Environmental Sciences, as well as editors with an engineering background 
  • Developing journal strategy and being responsible for its implementation in fields related to the wider sustainability portfolio 
  • Assessing submitted research papers as well as mediating complex situations 
  • Overseeing the peer review process for direct submissions and transferred contributions and having responsibility for transfer partnerships  
  • Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with other journals as transfer partners, and developing strategies for improving transfer success 
  • Establishing relationships with researchers to drive authorship and readership of iScience 
  • Working collaboratively with academic editorial board members and editors, having oversight over academic editors also in the social sciences 
  • Building effective working relationships with colleagues across Cell Press and beyond 
 
Requirements 
  • Have a PhD in the physical sciences (chemistry, materials science, engineering, etc.) or the Earth and environmental sciences discipline is a must, with preference to those who have worked on areas related to sustainability.
  • Have a minimum of 4 years previous editorial experience, though applicants with a professional background such as running a research group or working in industry are also encouraged. 
  • Have previous management experience is highly valued but not required. However, candidates will be required to show aptitude towards being people leaders. 
  • Display broad scientific interests, a desire to learn, and the ability to think critically about a wide range of scientific issues.  
  • Exhibit great interpersonal skills. Collaboration and networking are core aspects of the job. 
  • Able to organize, prioritize, and focus, and the ability and talent to help team members to do the same.
