Department Overview:

DesignLab is a digital media design consulting service for students and instructors at UW-Madison. Through one-on-one and small group consultations, we are helping the UW-Madison campus design better by working more effectively in digital media.

DesignLab has a two-part mission that includes services for both UW-Madison students and instructors. First, DesignLab seeks to expand expertise in digital media design on the UW-Madison campus by providing high-quality tutoring for all undergraduate and graduate students, as well as digital design consulting for researchers in all fields. Second, DesignLab seeks to improve instruction at UW-Madison by offering curricular services and support to instructors using digital media assignments in their courses. Through these combined goals, DesignLab is contributing to the UW-Madison’s central mission to provide a learning environment in which faculty, staff, and students can discover, examine critically, preserve, and transmit the knowledge, wisdom, and values that will improve the quality of life for all.

Training Week: Aug 24-28 (15-20 hours total, times flexible)

Approximately 20 hours per week divided as follows:
-Required Weekly Staff Meeting: Every Monday 10am-12pm (2 hours per week), beginning Sept 7
-Lab Shifts set by supervisor totaling 12 hours per week, starting Sept 2-Dec 9
-Additional 6 hours per week of projects, instruction, or outreach

Qualifications:

Applicants must be graduate students eligible for teaching assistant positions and must be available every Monday from 10am-12pm for our weekly lab meeting.

Applicants should have excellent time-management skills, have the flexibility to adapt their schedule to new assignments as they come in weekly, and be able to handle multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously. Preference will be given to applicants who have flexible schedules.

Applicants should also be able to demonstrate proficiency in digital media design. A well-evidenced interest in one or more of the following areas is essential: communication, graphic design, video production, sound design, digital literacy, data visualization, life science communication, user interface/user experience (UI/UX), or other related fields.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Minimum technical skills: 1-2 years of experience in digital design or production. 1+ year of teaching and/or consulting experience.

All staff are expected to participate in training sessions for all the tools used by DesignLab, but preference will be given to applicants with expertise in such skills as digital illustration, graphic design, data visualization, website or app design, print design, video production, sound design, and/or cartography.

Experience with the following software is preferred but not required: any of the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Audition, Express, etc.), Audacity, PowerPoint, Canva, WordPress, Tableau, R, and ArcGIS.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

TAs will work as consultants in the DesignLab for 12 hours per week (as assigned by your supervisor). In this role, TAs will take appointments and drop-in consultations in one of our locations: College Library (Main Location), Ebling Library (Satellite), Memorial Library (Satellite), Morgridge Hall (Satellite), or other locations as assigned. During consultations, the TA will support UW-Madison students, faculty, and staff to design better digital media projects.

TAs will also participate in the weekly staff meeting (Mondays 10am-12pm). In these meetings, we share weekly notes, give updates on instruction, and workshop new assignments. Occasionally, we will have discussions on new technology or pedagogical approaches, as well as bring in trainers to help our staff learn software. We see this as a professional development time for our staff to learn from each other.

Outside of the lab, TAs will use existing DesignLab templates to prepare and deliver outreach and teaching materials in courses across the UW-Madison campus. These materials include delivering lectures, running workshops, offering drop-in help sessions, or other materials as necessary.

Physical Demands:
