As part of our PreK-12 business, you’ll be part of a team that creates high quality content, robust learning solutions, and innovative print and digital components that are used by millions of educators and students every day.
 
Reporting to the Vice President, Academic Design, the Director, Academic Design, Math Assessment be responsible for driving best-in-class content for curriculum-embedded, curriculum-aligned and curriculum-agnostic assessments. The director is responsible for the training and work quality of a team of academic designers who are responsible and accountable for developing assessments and other data collection activities within our core math products, assessment content for supplemental or other math products, and creating and maintaining an effective metadata strategy to link assessment, instruction, and practice assets for efficient personalization.
 
Your contribution to the team includes:
  • Work closely with the VP of Academic Design to execute multi-year publishing plans. Tasks include but are not limited to:
    • developing cost estimates and resource plans to meet the assessment needs of the products;
    • ensuring all assessment content developed meets highest standards of academic integrity, quality, and validity; and
    • working with cross-functional teams to ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget constraints.
  • Work closely with the cross-functional teams to help develop prototypes, writer guidelines, item specifications (including item types, accessibility requirements, and scoring algorithms), test blueprints, and reporting capabilities.
  • Understand the implications of customer and sales deadlines, state curriculum requirements, and budget and resource limitations on workflow and schedule.
  • Forecast and manage program budgets and resources, identifying issues that impact cost, quality, and schedules.
  • Design and implement a system for metadata tracking and use across multiple math products and digital assets to enable personalized learning at scale.
  • Identify and recruit third-party vendors, freelance contractors, and other resources to support project plans and capacity needs beyond the existing team.
  • Empower staff through professional development opportunities; work to enhance and extend the department’s assessment literacy; builds leadership capabilities at all levels within the department, develop and retains talent, increase diversity, and communicate goals and performance improvement needs effectively.
  • Maintain a strong awareness of the competitive environment, including a focus on assessment strategy, accessibility, artificial intelligence, and other digital technology.
 
This position can work remotely within the continental United States but can also be based in one of our McGraw Hill offices.
 
What you’ll bring to the position:
 
  • Math standards and assessment knowledge. Knowledge of appropriate industry and subject-area content assessment development practices, content standards, and data science trends, with the ability to drive innovation in teams and products. An external network of assessment and math experts to provide advice and support as needed. At least 5 years of experience developing assessments and/or data-driving solutions required. Experience in both print and digital formats preferred.
  • Communication and Collaboration. Excellent communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills. Develop strong relationships with senior leaders and peers across functional areas as well as with external partners, customers, and other stakeholders in order to create assessment products that are high quality and meet the market needs. Create a compelling case for change where needed and work to constantly improve ideas, processes, and products.
  • Leadership. Be proactive, goal-oriented, and collaborative while leading multi-person teams, working both cross-functionally and hierarchically. Plan for the hiring needs of the department, ensure the right people are in the right roles, and proactively create growth and training plans to keep team skills current. Act as a coach and mentor, developing other leaders by providing feedback and direction Build an inclusive climate of trust and appreciation for those who think differently and come from different background. Take ownership for personal development; make constructive efforts to change and improve based on feedback
  • Focus on Results. Effective translation of the math portfolio strategy into clear and measurable team plans while holding leaders accountable for achieving results. Facilitate effective decision-making under tight timelines based on company priorities and foster confidence in achieving goals. Secure adequate budget and resources, and work collaboratively across functions to ensure plans are in place to manage risks by negotiating scope, schedule, and budget trade-offs. Set measurable standards of excellence and foster confidence in achieving goals.
 
Bachelor’s Degree in math or a math-related area is required; Assessment development experience and experience authoring accessible content in digital platforms are preferred.

The pay range for this position is between $100k-$120k annually, however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.
