Director, Data Center Operations
Location: Remote
Remote — with less than 20% travel. This role carries 24×7 ownership of data center and network operations.
How You’ll Contribute to Our Mission
As the Director of Data Center & Network Operations, you’ll ensure the reliability, performance, and scalability of Frontline Education’s global infrastructure. You’ll lead enterprise-wide data center and network strategy — advancing how we deliver resilient SaaS services that empower educators and students every day.
You’ll oversee the technology backbone that powers our platforms: colocation data centers, WAN and perimeter networks, and foundational infrastructure services. Partnering across Engineering, Security, and Platform teams, you’ll champion operational excellence, cost discipline, and a culture of continuous improvement.
How You’ll Drive Success
- Lead a small, senior “player-coach” team responsible for 24×7 data center, WAN, and perimeter operations.
- Manage our colocation strategy across multiple data centers — including vendor partnerships, circuit capacity, and power/cooling integrity.
- Oversee WAN design and operations, routing, site interconnects, and carrier relationships to ensure resilient global connectivity.
- Govern perimeter platforms including firewalls, WAFs (Imperva, Signal Sciences/Fastly, AWS WAF), and hardware load balancers to ensure availability, scalability, and safe change practices.
- Serve as the organizational owner of IT Service Management (ITSM) — including Incident, Change, and Problem processes; CMDB; JSM platform; SLAs/OLAs; and CAB leadership.
- Build disciplined change management and governance workflows that reduce risk and strengthen service reliability.
- Implement robust monitoring, telemetry, and reporting across the network and edge platforms.
- Partner with Security to ensure strong separation of duties, safe policy execution, and proactive risk mitigation.
- Lead the SPOF (single point of failure) reduction program across circuits, edge, and data centers.
- Drive contract optimization and capacity planning to reduce operating costs without sacrificing reliability.
- Report key metrics to executives — availability, MTTR, change success, and cost performance — with clarity and insight.
What You Bring to Help Us Grow
- 12+ years in infrastructure and network operations, including 5+ years leading 24×7 enterprise or SaaS environments.
- Proven success owning WAN, firewalls, WAFs, and hardware load balancers at scale.
- Demonstrated experience standing up and scaling ITSM systems (preferably JSM) with CMDB and automated service mapping.
- Track record of measurable improvements in MTTR, change failure rate, and availability.
- Strong vendor management and budgeting skills with a focus on operational efficiency.
- Expertise in DNS, IPAM, and PKI platforms, with an automation-first approach (IaC, NetOps, observability).
- Deep understanding of ITIL practices and operational governance.
- A mindset that blends architectural thinking with hands-on leadership — balancing rigor with collaboration.
What You’ll Need to Thrive
- Operational Excellence: You anticipate challenges, build resilient systems, and drive disciplined improvement.
- Adaptable Leadership: You guide teams through change with empathy and clear direction.
- Curious Problem-Solver: You continuously learn, experiment, and improve through data and feedback.
- Collaborative Spirit: You value partnership across Security, SRE, and Platform teams.
- Human-Centered Innovation: You use technology responsibly — to strengthen, not replace, human judgment.
