Position Details
The Director, eLearning & Design will be based out of a home office located anywhere within the contiguous United States (Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern time zones) or United States territories that fall within the Atlantic time zone.
Position Overview
The Director, eLearning & Design will collaborate with the Deputy Chief Officer, Accelerator & Professional Learning Services (“Deputy Chief Officer”) and Executive Director, eLearning & Design to set and drive a clear vision for New Leaders content and program design for the Accelerator and Professional Learning Services. The Director, eLearning & Design works with internal and external subject matter experts to research and create content that results in impactful, high-quality professional development that meets the needs of our school system clients and results in changes to participants’ work practices to improve student achievement outcomes.
This position reports to the Executive Director, eLearning & Design.
Specific Responsibilities
Strategy and Project Planning
- Contribute to the planning and execution of project plans to guide the Accelerator design work.
- Partner with the Executive Director, eLearning & Design to develop systems and processes for managing the creation and revision of Accelerator course content, ensuring alignment with instructional design best practices.
- Develop and execute timelines for design and review of content by internal stakeholders, in collaboration with the Executive Director, eLearning & Design.
eLearning, Design, and Development
- Co-lead instructional design and the development of multimedia assets, including videos, animations, simulations, and interactive elements, to support diverse learning modalities.
- Co-develop strategy for incorporating multimedia elements, ensuring New Leaders’ educational materials are visually appealing and pedagogically sound.
- Serve as the lead on creative and art direction forAccelerator & PLS instructional designfor traditional and competency-based education programs.
- Implement production workflows, including scripting, filming, audio recording, and post-production editing.
- Ensure media projects are optimize dfor various platforms (LMS, websites, mobile) and meet accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG).
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures to document the eLearning and Design team’s processes for designing, developing, and revising courses.
- Build and revise courses in Canvas or other learning management systems, including graphics, videos, interactive elements, and other multimedia assets.
- Prepare course sections, ensuring that each section is populated with the correct instructor information, dates, and LMS settings (term prep); support the training of consultants who will support term prep work, as needed.
- Create visual designs and layouts to support the development of aesthetically pleasing communications and collateral for the wider Accelerator and PLS team.
- Leverage knowledge of user experience design to develop and implement an engaging, streamlined UX that enhances the learning journey for students, as well as coaches and instructors alike.
- Develop and implement visual and editorial guidelines, in partnership with the Executive Director, eLearning & Design.
- Coordinate and manage the work of external vendors as needed, including copy editors, audio talent, and video production companies.
- Double check all works for technical accuracy, grammar, punctuation, etc.
- Lead efforts to audit asynchronous materials for compliance with Web Accessibility content guidelines.
Collaboration with Internal and External Stakeholders
- Take the lead in executing cross-functional design projects with the wider Accelerator and PLS team, such as designing communications for admissions, supporting asynchronous onboarding,etc.
- Communicate with university staff and faculty as needed regarding university LMS settings, instructor information, etc.
- Collaborate with internal and external subject matter experts to embed Best-in-Class instructional design principles and adult learning theory into all Accelerator and PLS content and delivery.
- Collaborate with partners and vendors to support seamless integration of e-learning into program design.
Leadership

Other responsibilities
- Support the development of learning assets for other programs and Accelerator sub teams (K-12 professional learning and district-level products and services, admissions, implementation, evaluation, and strategy).
- Support the onboarding of implementation staff as needed.
- Support the management of the content library and Learning Management System for K-12 and district consulting products and services.
- Implement a Plan, Do, Study, Act cycle to support continuous improvement of program design.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degreerequired.
- Professional Experience:
- At least 7 years of relevant professional experience.
- Minimum 3 years of instructional design or program design experience required.
- Demonstrated experience in competency-based education program models required.
- Team-Driven: Proven ability to collaborate effectively with individuals across a variety of backgrounds andexperiences;must be results-driven whilemaintaininga collaborative and inclusive leadership style.
- Mission Alignment: Passionate belief in academic excellence for every student, aligned with New Leaders' mission.
- Proven experience designing and implementing instructional content grounded in adult learning theories, preferably with multimedia elements, interactive learning, and accessibility considerations.
- Proven record of success supporting adult learning around using multiple data sources to inform instructional decisions; using a cycle of inquiry andaction researchand leadership development.
- Experience managing projects, including planning, timeline creation, and cross-functional coordination, to ensure effective course development and content updates.
- Demonstrated ability to write scripts and content for an external audience.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines while working in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail, superior organizational skills, time management skills, self-direction, and motivation.
- Demonstrated proficiency with eLearning design tools including but not limited to Articulate 360, Canvas LMS, and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Up to date with emerging eLearning tools, instructional design platforms, and creative software, with a demonstrated ability and willingness to learnnew technologiesto enhance course design and learner experience.
- Strong skills in designing courses for an LMS, including the ability to design and format course pages using the HTML editor. PreviousCanvas LMS admin experience preferred.
- Demonstrated excellence in relationship management, interpersonal abilities, and oral and written communication skills.
- Computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Google Workspace Apps, various AI applications, and Internettools.
- Must be able to travel on occasion aligned with New Leaders’ Travel and In-Person Activities policy.
- New Leaders requires each employee to be fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccination (i.e., at least two weeks have passed since the employee received the dose of a single-dose vaccine or the second dose of a two-dose vaccine with at least the minimum recommended interval between doses) or to obtain an approved exemption or reasonable accommodation through the Human Resources team within six weeks of their start date as a term and condition of employment.
Time Commitment
- This role requires some work to be scheduled during evening or weekend hours.
Physical Requirements
The employee's routine activities involve sitting, talking, hearing, and using hands for tasks like typing, filing, and handling objects. Visual acuity is necessary for keyboard use, data analysis, transcribing, computer terminal viewing, and extensive reading. The role may involve ordinary ambulatory skills for visits to other locations or the ability to perform activities like standing, walking, lifting, carrying, and moving light-weight items. Proficiency in hand-eye coordination, along with dexterity in arms, hands, and fingers for tasks like grasping, operating standard office equipment, and learning technical information, is essential.
