The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
 
Position Summary
Reporting to Executive Director, Clinical Finance for Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), the Director, Funds Flow is responsible for the implementation and oversight of the Funds Flow relationship between CUIMC and NYP.
 
Covering all 18 departments for their programmatic, research, and teaching support agreements between NYP and CUIMC, the Director is the subject matter expert in the Funds Flow model, tests, arrangements, and ensures the accuracy and review of faculty effort reporting, which informs the mission-based profit and loss statements used for Funds Flow. The Director leverages expertise to drive solutions and navigate the art of the possible.
 
This role requires an understanding of both finance and operations as it relates to the impacts of the funding CUIMC receives from NYP. The Director will develop and maintain excellent working relationships with Chairs, Department Administrators (DA), CUIMC leadership, and NYP Leadership.
 
This position demands responsiveness to both internal and external deadlines and requires a highly organized, self-motivated, and dependable individual. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong analytical problem-solving skills and the ability to plan and work independently with a high level of accountability.

Responsibilities
Summary of Responsibilities
Operations
•Oversees the quarterly effort reporting process. Effectively communicates the purpose and goals of the process. Reviews submissions from departments for adherence to effort allocation guidelines. Deeply understands each department’s effort allocation policy to ensure that reporting matches policy.
•Oversees the annual mission-based profit and loss statement reporting process. Reviews allocation rules to ensure they continue to make sense. Works closely with Controllers Office to refine coding rules as needed. Partners with departments to ensure they understand the implications of overrides they make within the process. Ensures that all signed off submissions from departments adhere to funds flow principals.
•Provides annual and as needed education on the CUIMC/NYP Funds Flow Process to relevant parties.
•Runs the annual Funds Flow process for one third of the departments. Oversees the content to be shared, thoroughly reviews the schedules, ensures understanding of department goals and explanations for the process. Communicates in conjunction with and on behalf of the department to CUIMC and NYP leadership throughout the review.
•Reviews and explains the annual formulaic support funding calculations for senior leadership and the departments. Understands and communicates any changes in approach.
 
Strategic
•Uses analysis to make recommendations for improvements and optimization. Participates in improvement/optimization initiatives.
•Partners with Senior leaders determine key performance indicators and implement performance improvement initiatives, as needed. Continuously seeks and implements process improvements, considering resource allocation and the overarching financial health.
•Source feedback from key stakeholders in departments, central business office & vendors with the goal of assessing financial performance against established benchmarks.
 
People
•Demonstrates professionalism and accountability in interactions with stakeholders through clear, respectful, and timely communication and responsive follow-up.
•Drives talent management strategy in collaboration with senior leadership and Human Resources experts, overseeing all people-related matters, including performance management, talent acquisition, professional development, and employee engagement for direct reports.
 
Compliance
•Maintain current knowledge regarding financial mechanisms within the healthcare industry.
•Conform to all applicable HIPAA, Fiscal Compliance and other pertinent regulations.
•Participates in committees, task force, and work groups.

Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience, including 5 years of related experience in grants and financial management.
• Demonstrated skills in problem assessment, project management, analytical skills, and resolution and collaborative problem-solving in complex, interdisciplinary settings.
• Ability to manage high volume of data sets; extract, evaluate, clean, and summarize; conduct qualitative and quantitative data analysis and validation as applicable to business development areas of responsibility.
• Ability to work collaboratively and promote team building with a culturally diverse staff and patient/family population.
• Strong leadership, organizational, and customer service skills, demonstrating tact and sensitivity in stressful situations.
• Ability to work independently and follow-through and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. This position requires the ability to interact positively, constructively and effectively with employees and professional staff.
• Must possess the ability to maintain confidentiality, possess a high level of professionalism, and be customer service driven.

Preferred Qualifications
•Master’s degree preferred (MBA, MPH, or MHA) is desirable and may substitute in part for experience.
•Experience in a faculty practice setting.
•Familiarity with Columbia systems.
