Job Description Summary  | Intercollegiate athletics are integral to the overall educational experience at Eastern Oregon University. Director of Sports Information & Marketing has a key leadership role in carrying out the University’s and department’s mission, goals, and objectives. The Department of Athletics promotes core values that inspire academic excellence, athletic triumph, and community engagement through meaningful relationships and opportunities.

This position is responsible for the following outcomes: Encouraging innovation and cultivate a mindset for growth; Promoting community engagement and character development through respect, responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship, and servant leadership; Strictly adhering to the highest level of fiscal control and full compliance with all governing associations with transparency and integrity and must operate with strong fiscal oversight and have a positive year-end budget); Engaging our student-athletes and alumni through collaborative efforts that reflect a “Lifetime Mountie” approach (develop and promote opportunities for alumni to participate in the giving of their own time, treasure, and talents in support of the Athletic Department and specific sport programs); Supporting the physical, emotional, social, and mental development of student-athletes through a robust system of care and support; Embracing the responsibility of equitable treatment and promotion of diversity, acceptance, and inclusion (ensure the program and department command immediate action against hate acts, violence, hazing, or other forms of discrimination); Working with the Assistant Sports Information Director implementing a comprehensive marketing and promotions plan to increase attendance at home events; Assisting the Director of Athletics with executing the department’s annual strategic plan; Managing all home event operations and media coverage for away competitions; and Meeting all required deadlines, as outlined by the Conference and the NAIA. 

Responsibilities  | | Publication Development – Promote Athletics, through a variety of platforms with a strong presence in publication development. Ensures publication material is in align with EOU Athletics’ mission and core values. Ensure excellent quality in all work produced, internally and externally to the institution. Remain fluent in AP style writing, photography techniques, and have excellent interpersonal skills, both orally and written. Work effectively on a daily basis in a variety of software programs, including Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Premier Pro, Boxout Sports, and Microsoft Office. Meet all EOU, CCC, Frontier, and NAIA publication deadlines. Remain innovative in the design of all publications, including posters and pocket schedules, sports media guides, programs, booster club brochures, videos for YouTube and social media platforms, and special events invitations. Design creative and innovative video productions for recap stories, game highlights and promotions, season promotion videos, and special cover stories. Work closely with University Advancement (UA) to coordinate the use of official University branding and logos, as well as on many special events.

Leadership & Administrative Responsibilities – A strong commitment to leading the sports information staff to excellence in the promotion of student-athletes and operations of all events and activities that are supported by the sports information department. The incumbent provides guidance, vision, and innovation to connect in new and exciting ways with EOU fans, alumni, and community members. The incembernt must be highly organized, with a high-level of time-management skills in order to accomplish the various tasks and meet all deadlines. Contribute to the strategic leadership on advancing EOU sports promotion, marketing, and engagement. Secure necessary resources and equipment to effectively produce the highest quality of work. Provide strong supervision and leadership to a large student-worker staff, and several other consistent positions in the office (Assistant Sports Information Director, grad-assistant, interns, and part-time staff). With this responsibility, the incumbent ensures quality and effective training to all employees that report directly to this position. Primarily responsible for securing a qualified and trained staff for all home events. Ensure strong fiscal oversight of the sports information budget, including management and inventory of all promotional items, securing competitive rates for any material ordered through this budget, and ensuring a transparent and positive year-end budget balance. Work with the eligibility coordinator on academic award submissions. Support the department to ensure the highest quality and communication of sports media policies. Engage in strategic planning with administrative team to enhance and strengthen the department policies and practices, to identify opportunities, and implement procedures to enhance the promotion of EOU Athletics. Evaluate, assess, and re-define goals for sports information department. Cooperate well with coaches and athletic staff to enhance the operations of the department and overall experience for student-athletes.

Primary Media Liaison – Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets. Communicate sports schedules with all local media and facilitate access to events and equipment, as needed to cover home competitions. Foster relationships to ensure continued support from media officials to all EOU sports and select athletic events. A focus on the Eastern Oregon 10-county region, in order to promote the university mission in this area is required.

Marketing – Secure and maintain up to date and accurate student-athlete and staff profiles. Promote team, individual, and division accomplishments, awards, human-interest stories through regular web postings, press releases, social media engagement and videos. Highlighting the athletic programs with a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy designed to enhance awareness of EOU’s distinctive values. Ensure fluency with video production, to design and promote innovative and exciting team highlights, cover stories, hype videos, and many others. Ensure continued knowledge in software that supports the design of video production, including Adobe Premier Pro and After Effects. Establish an annual process and timeline to implement new and creative marketing and promotion strategies. Ensure active engagement in all EOU athletic social media platforms to promote student-athletes and programs, and to ensure fans are engaged with events and stories from the department. Primarily responsible for the monitoring of team social media accounts, to ensure best practices are applied and posts are fully in alignment with values and principles. Is responsible for creating and coordinating promotions for all of EOU’s athletic programs to enhance the game day experience, stimulate increased attendance, and foster student and community involvement. They will coordinate public relation activities for coaches and student-athletes as approved by arranging interviews with print, radio or television media. Coordinate all team and action photography and video to be used for webpage and publications. Oversee the submission of paperwork to conference and national agencies related to postseason academic and performance awards. Ensure submission of all EOU, Conference, and national recognitions and awards (player of the week, etc.). Oversee the submission and research of EOU’s annual Hall of Fame process, to ensure excellent promotion of teams and student-athletes ‘accomplishments. Connect and maintain positive relationships with EOU athletic constituents, including boosters, alumni, student-body, surrounding community and campus faculty and staff. Coordinate game recognition events (senior day, special awards, etc.).

Event Management – Lead administrator of all home contests. For each home event they will oversee all game-day operations by secure game management personnel, to include all media support positions (announcer, scoreboard, score clock, book, statistics, video personnel, and many others). Ensure full coverage of all student-worker staff, to operate ticket box-office, check tickets, sing the national anthem, and many others. Ensure all game day ticketing operations adhere to university cash handling policies and procedures. Create and implement all game day promotions, to engage with fans and various constituents. Ensure a high-quality marketing plan has been designed for promotional events, as well as developing and implementing new practices for event operations to ensure continued efficiencies. Foster positive relationships and continually engage in new partnerships with outside agencies to enhance EOU athletic events, such as acrobatic groups, youth dance teams, campus clubs, ROTC, Special Olympics, and many others. Communicate important event details with visiting teams, administrators, conference representatives and the commissioner. The incumbent ensures high quality pictures, and videos are captured during all home events. Responsible for live-streaming events, and the set-up and breakdown of all production equipment. Point person to ensure EOU Athletics remains in compliance with all NAIA and CCC Sport Guidelines.

Budget – Direct oversight management of sports information budget.

Essential relationships – internal and external to the University:
Staff- Direct leadership and supervision of sports information staff. Works with staff in various EOU departments to support the promotion of EOU Athletics and student-athletes. Works heavily with coaches and EOU staff to secure information to write press releases, arrange media, and develop & maintain web pages.
Students- Hire, train and supervise student worker staff for game management. Engage with students through new student orientation, student athletics events, athletic competitions, event management and community service. Work regularly with student-athletes to promote and highlight their academic and athletic successes.
General Public- Building strong relationships with internal and external constituents, including all regional and state-wide publication agencies, fans, boosters, and alumni.
Conference and National Affiliations – Primary liaison for EOU Athletics with the following agencies: Cascade Collegiate Conference; Frontier Collegiate Conference; National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association, and College Sports Communication.
Mountaineer Athletic Association – Attendance and promotion of Mountaineer Athletic Association (MAA) functions. Assists the MAA to secure resources and provides support as needed.
Volunteers - Coordinate and supervise all game day staff positions, to include volunteer positions.
Alumni—Engage our alumni through collaborative efforts that reflect a “Lifelong Mountie” approach.
University Advancement – Liaison to UA for department publications, press releases, and to provide support and access to sports data and material, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications  | Education: BS or BA in Athletic Administration, Business, English, Communications, Journalism or closely related field. 
Experience: Three or more years of experience working in sports media outlets or relatable experience. . Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills, a commitment to gender equity and diversity, and a preferred background in working with collegiate student-athletes and coaches. Must have knowledge of NAIA rules and regulations
Must satisfactorily complete EOU criminal and credential background check. Having a criminal history is not an automatic bar to employment.
