Job Summary
The Director of Student Engagement is an essential member of the Division of Student Affairs at Oberlin College. This position provides leadership to the Office of Student Leadership and Involvement, while leading the overall student organization engagement strategy with an overall goal of student learning, success, and retention.
Responsibilities
The Director of Student Engagement also serves as a resource to student organizations throughout the entire life cycle of an organization, including managing the new organization chartering process, advising the “Student Finance Committee” that funds student organizations, leading Student Organization Leadership Retreats, Training Organizations and Organization Advisors, and helping with organizational leadership transitions. This position should keep track of trends of best practice in higher education, to best support our student organizations and provide high-impact engagement opportunities.
Essential Job Functions
Student Organizations
  • Coordinate the student organization chartering process.
  • Manage student organization storage, resource room, and office allocation.
  • Serve as a resource for all student organizations.
  • Advise the “Student Finance Committee” that allocates student organization
    funding.
  • Facilitate training for the Student Organization undergraduate leadership and
    advisors.
  • Organize and execute training and professional development for all student organization advisors.
  • Maintain the virtual student organization resource guide and handbook.
  • Assist the Student Senate and Director of Student Leadership & Civic Engagement in coordinating an annual Student Organization and Leadership Recognition and Awards event.
  • Lead workshops, in collaboration with the Director of Student Leadership & Civic Engagement, to help navigate issues for organizations such as, but not limited to, conflict, leadership transition, and inclusive practices.
Administrative
  • Negotiate and execute event contracts on behalf of Oberlin College.
  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise student employees who fall under the purview of this position.
  • Revise policies relating to the Office of Student Leadership & Involvement annually.
Miscellaneous
  • Participate in professional development organizations including, but not limited to, ACPA, NASPA, ACUI, NACA, GLCA, NODA, and COFHE.
  • Be visible on campus to students, student organizations, and campus staff.
  • Participate on campus committees, including for large-scale events, to help represent student organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Marginal Job Functions
Required Qualifications
  • Educational Requirement: Master’s degree in Student Affairs Administration, Counseling, or other related fields.
  • Five (5) or more years of progressive experience working in Student Affairs and, in particular, with campus programming and student organizations.
  • Experience advising student organizations on a college campus.
  • Prior Experience supervising both professional staff and student staff.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work on several large projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the Google Suite.
  • Significant experience in training, team building/facilitation, co-curricular event planning, assessment, and mentoring/coaching with diverse constituencies.
  • Experience with budget management and financial systems, including problem solving, collaboration, partnership development, and counseling/human relationships within a supervisory role.
  • Experience with large-scale event planning.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience advising a Student Finance Board that allocates money to campus organizations.
  • Experience working with “Presence” Student Engagement Software
