Job Description:

The Director of Student Success for Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for student services and engagement initiatives. This role will report to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs with Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering and is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Student Affairs office, supervising support staff, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, assisting with budget planning and management, and overseeing student interest groups and their associated budgets. The Director plays a key role in fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and supportive campus environment.

The Shufeldt School of Medicine is temporarily located in Tempe; however, school operations are expected to relocate to the Downtown Phoenix Campus in Spring 2026.

Pay Range: $85,700 - $105,00: Depending on Experience

Essential Duties:

Operational Leadership

  • Manage the daily operations of the Student Affairs department to ensure efficient and effective service delivery to medical students and the other members of the Student Affairs team.

  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and programs that support student and department success. This includes identifying new opportunities and resources to improve student experiences and strengthen collaboration between Student Affairs and other departments.

  • Draft, manage, and house department standard operating procedures for the Student Affairs team ensuring a legacy of information, including procedure steps and reasoning that can be accessed and shared by the department.

  • Support the Associate Dean with accreditation compliance, which include assisting with institutional accreditation efforts by ensuring departmental compliance with relevant standards and documentation requirements.

  • Collaborate with academic and administrative units to align Student Affairs practices with accreditation criteria.

  • Provide budget support for the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, which includes oversight of the budget, assisting with planning and forecasting department budget needs. Monitor expenditures and ensure responsible stewardship of resources that are designated for the department and student groups.

  • Develop and manage a Student Affairs annual master roadmap which includes but is not limited to medical student milestones, events, and engagement points and programming.

  • Draft, maintain, and house cycle reporting for all Student Affairs units with the goal of gleaning insights about new or changing trends, YOY data, and progress toward strategic changes.

  • Participate on SOMME committees, subcommittees, and workgroups.

  • Join national and regional communities within the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the Group on Student Affairs (GSA) to stay aware of national and regional trends in medical school, as well as to build connections and best practices from peers at other institutions.

Personnel

  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate Student Affairs support staff members through formal scheduled development meetings, annual review process, as well as providing real time feedback.

  • Foster a collaborative and professional work environment that promotes staff professional development, high performance, and engagement with the Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering community.

  • Ensure consistent and effective communication with staff to disseminate information, discuss department issues, and identify solutions to problems.

  • Assist the Associate Dean of Student Affairs with the creation and implementation of policies and procedures necessary for optimal performance of the team. This includes creation of new positions, oversight of new hire processes, implementation of organizational changes, and/or on-boarding processes for the department. Maintain and archive documentation related to these areas.

  • Act as Student Affairs lead in times when the Associate Dean is unavailable. This may include using best practices and judgment in making decisions.

Student Engagement

  • Create and lead student engagement activities throughout the medical school journey.

  • Lead the creation of the medical student government, which includes roles, duties, and standard operating procedures for the group. This may include role selection, election creating, and meetings cadence.

  • Track and support student interest groups, including registration, event planning, and leadership development.

  • Manage and allocate budgets for student organizations in alignment with institutional policies.

  • Support the creation and implementation of national student societies and associations at the medical school, such as Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS), American Medical Association (AMA), American Medical Student Association (AMSA), Student National Medical Association (SNMA), etc. Act as a liaison with the setup of the programs and support the chairs or faculty leads with awareness and promotion of the groups that get established.

  • Collaborate with various support groups within ASU Health and ASU main campus to ensure students are knowledgeable about resources and engagement opportunities that live outside Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering Student Affairs. Ensure that students are aware of health and wellbeing options. Support the creation of a culture that promotes health and wellness. 

Other duties

  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts

  • Initiate confidential correspondence on behalf of the project

  • Work both independently and within a complex structured team

  • Able to exercise judgment within generally defined practices & policies to determine appropriate action

  • Schedule appointments and maintain calendar for project

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education or related field (Doctorate preferred).

  • Strong understanding of accreditation processes and compliance requirements.

  • Demonstrated experience in budget development and financial management.

  • Experience with student information systems and budget tracking software.

  • Knowledge of student development theory and best practices in student engagement.

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse

  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate

  • Frequent physical demands may include stooping, bending, crawling under/around objects, reaching, lifting and pushing objects of varying weights up to 20 pounds (light) 

  • Required to work (weekends, and evenings)

  • Will be required to travel (for events, between campuses), rare nights or weekend work for school related events
