Everyday Speech is trusted by 55,000 educators across 5,000 districts for one-on-one interventions, small groups, and whole-class lessons that engage students and help build resiliency.
Everyday Speech is right for you if:
You care about making a positive impact.
End each day knowing that your work had a direct impact on the well-being of millions of students across the world. Project success means more than just shipping features - it means improving the lives of students and educators.
You value being a part of a company that takes care of its team.
Not only do we have
extremely happy team members, we also have incredible perks. Participate in our health/wellness and retirement benefit offerings, and between having every other Friday off (3-day weekends!) and our flexible PTO plan, that elusive work-life balance is an actual thing here.
You want to work for a true, remote-only company.
We’ve never had an office and never will. Our team is spread across 9 countries and 4 continents. We take remote work seriously and know how to support a distributed team. We give you the flexibility to work in a way that’s best for you, but still have high standards and accountability.
You want to join a startup that is growing rapidly *and* sustainably.
We have launched new products, maintained NPS scores of 70+, maintained eNPS (internal, employee score) of 90+, rapidly grown our team, and exponentially increased our user base, all over the last few years. Yet, as a fully bootstrapped company, our growth is organic and sustainable. Our focus is delivering value to students and educators, not paying back investors.
As a key member of our Engineering Department, the Engineering Manager will support and grow a high-performing group of engineers while leading delivery across two cross-functional pods. You’ll coach and inspire mid-to-senior level engineers to partner closely with Product and Design, enabling your teams to build scalable, user-focused solutions that empower educators and drive meaningful student outcomes.
This is a people-first role that balances coaching and delivery. You’ll nurture a culture where engineers are connected to the why behind their work, supported in their growth, challenged to improve, and inspired to own outcomes that matter. Your teams won’t just ship tickets—they’ll build momentum around a shared mission, with clarity, accountability, and purpose.
The ideal candidate is someone who is values aligned. They
- Start with empathy so they can create a culture of direct, candid feedback between engineers and across the pod, so the team is operating with high standards and trust in each other.
- Ruthlessly prioritize and focus the team on what’s most important for us to achieve our goals and what’s most likely to make the greatest impact on the students and educators we serve.
- Create momentum through a mix of foreseeing the delivery obstacles ahead, learning from past mistakes, and experimenting with new ways of working to drive greater progress in future sprints.
- Are fearlessly objective and love digging into the data behind our engineering operations, product usage, and delivery progress, so they can challenge the status quo operations to make the team and the product every day.
- Exercise agency by solving problems and creating systems and processes that no one asked them to, and by empowering each engineer to do the same in their day-to-day work.
- Are driven to grow by embracing challenges and taking risks as an individual and a cross-functional team, and creating a safe-to-fail culture where everyone can grow the most.
Your work will have a significant impact on our product’s functionality and user experience, helping educators everywhere teach the skills necessary for students to succeed.
In this role, you will:
- Lead with a growth mindset and an owner’s attitude. We build this software, we run it, and we own it end-to-end.
- Manage two pods (approx. 5–7 engineers total), helping your teams stay connected, motivated, and focused on meaningful impact.
- Create the conditions for high-performing teams by fostering clarity, trust, and psychological safety.
- Facilitate team ceremonies, help sequence engineering work in partnership with Product, and support the consistent delivery of high-quality software.
- Coach and develop engineers by creating regular opportunities for feedback, growth, and goal-setting, supporting them as they stretch, take risks, and reach the next level in their careers.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and tech leads to scope and sequence work that aligns with OKRs.
- Act decisively when needed—proactively removing blockers, adjusting team focus, or escalating tradeoffs.
- Use data, retrospectives, and candid feedback to improve how we work, grounding decisions in evidence, not assumptions.
- Contribute to hiring, onboarding, and performance management for your engineers.
What We’re Looking For
In addition to values alignment…
- Curiosity: we’re a team of lifelong learners trying to be better every day.
- 4+ years of engineering management experience, including directly managing multiple pods or cross-functional teams.
- 8+ years of software development experience in product-focused engineering organizations.
- Demonstrated success coaching mid-to-senior engineers and building strong performance and growth systems.
- Experience managing in a remote-first environment, including async planning and distributed collaboration.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially across functions and time zones.
- Experience leading in ambiguous environments, including driving improvements and bringing others along.
Bonus points for experience in:
- EdTech, especially K-12 or curriculum development tools
- SaaS, B2B, or enterprise product development
- Product Engineering culture and agile product teams
- Familiarity with our specific stack (Angular, NestJS, Postgres, AWS)
In the first 3 months, you will:
- Build strong relationships through 1:1s and team practices.
- Learn how our product teams operate and where delivery friction exists.
- Take full ownership of sprint planning, standups, and retros for two pods.
- Begin coaching engineers and supporting career development conversations.
- Identify at least one system, ritual, or process to improve and lead a change initiative.
In the long term, you will:
- Grow healthy, high-performing teams that deliver reliable, high-impact software.
- Drive initiative planning by clarifying scope, supporting estimation, sequencing work, and aligning staffing across pods.
- Establish shared delivery practices and team norms that reduce friction, increase clarity, and help your teams move with confidence.
- Monitor progress across pods and collaborate with Product and Design as priorities shift or timelines evolve.
- Partner with tech leads to raise the bar on architecture, quality, and performance.
- Coach emerging engineering leaders and help shape the systems that support hiring, onboarding, and performance development across the team.
- Continuously shape our engineering culture to reflect our values of empathy, agency, objectivity, momentum, and a relentless drive to grow.
- Keep teams connected to the mission—helping engineers understand not just what they’re building, but why it matters to educators and students.
