Job Description
Reporting to the Director of Virginia Tech Electric Service (VTES), the Engineering Manager supervises and coordinates all engineering activities in support of the distribution of electricity on the VTES System on the Virginia Tech Campus and for VTES customers within the Town of Blacksburg. The Engineering Manager will promote reliable and safe operation of the VTES distribution system through identifying and engineering needed expansion and maintenance of the VTES system, development of appropriate procedures, support of routine and emergency maintenance, and monitoring and maintenance of a sound preventative maintenance program. Supervises engineering staff in VTES. Supports development of budgets by keeping abreast of and contributing discussion of issues such as system demand, supplier demand, and electric industry rate setting practices. Assists in developing and implementing grid modernization, grid innovations and integration of renewable and clean energy sources. Supports the development of the Utility Master Plan that will serve as a roadmap to align campus wide utility systems with Beyond Boundaries expansion plans and Climate Action Commitment. Formulates an asset management strategy. Candidate will coordinate efforts for federal and state grant funding opportunities. The incumbent will work to develop a collaborative relationship with other units within Facilities and with campus customers.
Required Qualifications
⢠Advanced degree in electrical engineering or directly related discipline; OR Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and experience directly related to position that equates to an advanced degree.
⢠Experience in a major industrial or institutional operation that includes design and operation of a complex medium voltage electrical distribution grid with switching components to permit dual feed capability.
⢠Knowledge of electrical generation components.
⢠Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards relating to the operation of electric utility distribution systems that includes systems varying from an underground urban high reliability type system to a typical overhead residential type system.
⢠Demonstrated experience and ability to perform technical engineering work such as fault current analysis, load studies, system coordination studies, power quality analysis, street lighting photometric analysis, duct-bank design, and cable pulling analysis.
⢠Experience in system design, testing, commissioning and startup of a variety of equipment including substation transformers, circuit breakers, relaying, automatic switching, advanced metering and communications, and SCADA type controls.
⢠Experience developing, maintaining and organizing documentation such as mapping, one-line diagrams, equipment manuals, test records and design specifications.
⢠Demonstrated experience in developing, planning, providing technical expertise and directing work of in house and contract crews related to switching, new construction, maintenance of all types of electrical utility facilities.
⢠Excellent communication and customer service skills including the ability to communicate with a diverse customer base in a variety of settings.
⢠Working knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.
Preferred Qualifications
⢠Advanced degree in engineering or in a field such as business that relates to the duties of the position.
⢠Experience at the management level with facilities management, budgeting, human resource management, fiscal administration, client management, and project planning.
⢠Experience with facilities services issues in a higher education or institutional setting.
