Job Description
New River Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under a state-wide system of 23 community colleges. The college is located on a one-hundred plus acre site at the intersection of U.S. Routes 11 and 100 in Dublin, Virginia with an instructional site in Christiansburg. The campus provides modern, well-equipped facilities for the career technical education programs as well as for the college transfer programs. Approximately 4,000 students comprise the student body.

In partnership with the President, NRCC’s chief fundraising officer, the Executive Director serves as the College’s senior advancement administrator, leading the Educational Foundation and setting multi-year strategy and annual plans that grow private support for scholarships, student success initiatives, academic programs, equipment, and capital priorities. Working alongside those stakeholders, the Executive Director personally manages a portfolio of major donors and prospects; aligns fundraising objectives with college strategy; and ensures best-practice development operations, including prospect research, moves management, gift processing, stewardship, and reporting.
In addition, the Executive Director provides executive leadership to the Foundation Board, including agenda planning, board development and education, committee support, and policy and bylaw stewardship. The role includes managing the Foundation’s finances and investments in coordination with external advisors and College finance partners; overseeing budgeting, audits, and regulatory compliance, and preparing routine financial and impact reports for the board and the College.
As a member of the President’s senior leadership team, the Executive Director collaborates with the executive leaders of the College’s other units to elevate philanthropic priorities, align messaging, and integrate donor-supported initiatives with enrollment, completion and workforce outcomes. The position also plans and manages high-visibility fundraising and friend-raising events that strengthen community ties and donor loyalty.
Finally, the Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day management and growth of the Foundation office: supervising a staff of one full-time and two part-time employees; maintaining advancement systems/CRM; and ensuring accurate, timely donor communications and acknowledgements.
Additional responsibilities include: Design and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan (annual, major and leadership gifts, corporate/foundation relations, planned giving, campaigns). Manage the Access to Community College Education (ACCE) program which provides free tuition to regional high school graduates. Oversee the annual allocation of Foundation scholarships to students. Personally manage a portfolio of major donor prospects, conduct cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Serve as executive liaison to the Foundation Board; coordinate agendas, committees, policy, and board development. Provide financial leadership for the Foundation: budgeting, fiscal operations, endowment oversight, audits, and compliance in coordination with external advisors and College finance. Lead donor and alumni engagement, communications, and targeted events that advance College priorities. Partner with Instruction & Student Services, Workforce, and External Relations to align philanthropic goals with enrollment, completion, transfer, and workforce outcomes. Supervise Foundation staff/consultants; oversee advancement systems/CRM, analytics, reporting, acknowledgements, and gift processing. Act as a visible ambassador in Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski Counties and the City of Radford cultivate relationships with civic, business, government, and university partners. Plan and manage signature events. Work evenings/weekends and travel with the region and across the state. Perform related duties as assigned.
Special Assignments | May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications | A master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Experience in fundraising or nonprofit advancement, including the successful solicitation of major gifts. Experience working with boards and senior executives.
Additional Considerations | The ability to translate strategy into measurable annual plans. Knowledge of endowment/investment oversight, non-profit compliance, and financial management. Proficiency with advancement CRM’s and data-driven planning. The communication skills necessary to interact positively with College personnel, the Foundation Board, donors, and other stakeholders. Progressive leadership experience in higher education. A doctorate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
