About the Department:The College of Science Human Resources Office (COS HR) is responsible for all matters pertaining to the well-being and development of the faculty and staff. We place strong emphasis on programs, processes, and activities that enhance the employee experience, improve efficiency, celebrate participation, partnership, and engagement, and support the institutional image of the College of Science. COS HR manages and oversees all aspects of a college's human resources operations, including recruiting; advising staff, faculty, and senior leadership on university policy and processes; and serving as the college liaison with Central university offices.
About the Position:The Human Resources Assistant provides administrative support in the Human Resources office for the College of Science. This position plays a key role in ensuring efficient HR operations for a large college within a research-intensive (R1) institution. The Human Resources Assistant manages day-to-day activities, assists with HR processes, and supports the coordination of personnel actions for faculty, staff, student employees, and temporary employees. The role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, discretion with confidential information, and the ability to work in a fast-paced academic environment. This position is not benefits-eligible due to part-time status.Position is part-time at 29 hours per week.Work is typically performed in an office setting with occasional remote work flexibility based on operational needs.Occasional overtime may be required during peak HR cycles.
Responsibilities:Key ResponsibilitiesHuman Resources OperationsAssist with the preparation and processing of personnel transactions, including hiring, onboarding, reappointments, job changes, and separations for faculty, staff, adjuncts, student employees, and temporary employees;Track and maintain accurate HR data, including personnel records;Prepare HR metrics and reports as requested; andMaintain electronic and physical HR files in accordance with university retention policies.
Customer Service & CommunicationRespond to inquiries from college leadership, department administrators, and employees regarding HR processes and policies;Direct individuals to appropriate university resources and escalate complex issues to the Director; andServe as a liaison between the College of Science HR and college department and centers.
Special ProjectsAssist in developing and maintaining HR guides, forms, and process documentation; andContribute to process improvement initiatives within the HR Office.
Required Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent; Minimum of three years of progressively responsible administrative experience; HR or higher education experience strongly preferred;Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and the ability to learn HRIS systems;Strong organizational and multitasking skills with attention to detail;Excellent written and verbal communication skills;Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion; andDemonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:Associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred;Experience working in a higher education or large, complex organization;Familiarity with HR processes, employment laws, and compliance requirements; andExperience with enterprise HR systems (e.g., Ellucian Banner, MicroStrategy) and document management tools.
