Job Summary  | We seek an experienced Private Cloud Architect to architect and manage our private cloud infrastructure, focusing specifically on high-performance AI/ML workloads and inference. This role will build and optimize Kubernetes clusters, drive cloud-native automation via CI/CD pipelines, and explore advanced Software-Defined Infrastructure (SDN, SDS, SDSec) and serverless concepts to deliver a resilient on-premises platform.  This is a position will be with the Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC), in an important and growing academic computing center that serves researchers and educators at the University of Utah and beyond.

Responsibilities  | Kubernetes for AI/ML: Design and deploy highly available Kubernetes clusters, optimized for GPU utilization and AI/ML training/inference.
Cloud-Native Automation: Architect and implement end-to-end CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab, ArgoCD, Jenkins) and automated infrastructure deployment.
Infrastructure Strategy: Define the technical roadmap for the on-premises cloud environment and drive adoption of best practices.
Software-Defined Infrastructure: Evaluate and implement advanced SDN, SDS, and SDSec solutions.
IaC Implementation: Develop and maintain all infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, Ansible).
Performance Tuning: Collaborate with ML teams to optimize cluster and resource performance for maximum job throughput.
Security & Compliance: Ensure platform architecture meets all security standards and compliance requirements set by internal security/compliance teams (e.g., HIPAA, NIST 800-171).
Technical Leadership: Create architecture documentation, help create roadmaps with input from multiple teams, mentor engineering staff, and potential collaboration on grants and other funding requests.

Minimum Qualifications  | Experience: 6+ years in infrastructure, cloud architecture, or systems engineering.
Kubernetes: Deep, production-level experience designing and operating bare-metal/on-prem Kubernetes.
AI/ML Support: Direct experience configuring infrastructure (GPU virtualization/passthrough) for containerized AI/ML workflows.
Core Infrastructure: Strong command of enterprise networking, load balancing, and SDS/storage solutions (e.g., Ceph).
Automation/IaC: Extensive hands-on experience with Terraform, Ansible, and other IaC/configuration management tools.
CI/CD: Proven background in implementing and managing CI/CD pipelines for cloud-native applications.

Preferences  | Expertise in Software-Defined Networking (SDN) (e.g., Cilium, Calico).
Familiarity with on-prem Serverless technologies (e.g., Knative, OpenFaaS).
Experience implementing security controls via SDSec and Kubernetes policies (e.g., OPA/Gatekeeper).
Relevant professional cloud or Kubernetes certifications (CKA, CKAD, etc.).
Familiarity with workflows used by research computing
Proficiency in scripting or programming (Python, Go) for custom automation.
