Instruction Specialist, Senior Full Description

Job Summary
This position will work in the manufacturing spaces and provide direct instruction to undergraduate and graduate students in the use of appropriate equipment and tooling to make parts for curricular needs. This position helps students develop drawings and solid models of parts and translate these drawings into real parts using appropriate equipment in the manufacturing spaces. This position will also ensure safety is maintained within the manufacturing mall complex and assist with proper training procedures for teaching assistants and student employees. This position will also serve as an instructional lab supervisor, providing direct support to faculty, staff, and students.
 
This position will provide strategic guidance in the development of new manufacturing procedures and processes to further modernize the school’s undergraduate program. In this role, given new concepts in labs or projects, this position will lead the design efforts to physically implement these conceptual ideas. This position will engage collaborators and resources as needed to develop the proposed solution and bring the proposal through the design review process, fabrication process, and implementation process.

What You'll Be Doing:
  • Serve as the first point of contact for users in one or more of the manufacturing spaces.
  • Provide direct instruction to student users, using common materials (metal, wood, plastics), on the safe usage of all tools available in the M.E. Manufacturing Spaces.
  • Serve as a subject matter consultant for formal M.E. lab classes that meet in the manufacturing spaces.
  • Assist Teaching Assistants in the formal delivery of lab material.
  • Work with Faculty on the design and development of effective lab activities given the constraints of student count, time, and equipment.
  • Coordinate with courses to ensure all course needs are met with the limitations of timing, space, and equipment.
  • Review student drawing packages and models of parts to be produced.
  • Work with students to understand how the parts fit into a larger assembly, mechanism, or machine.
  • Advise students on optimal methods, materials, and manufacturing processes for manufacturing said components.
  • Always ensure a safe working environment in the manufacturing spaces.
  • Foster a culture of safety and learning to ensure all users have a positive learning experience. 
  • Design and develop shop safety policies and procedures to ensure the safe operation in the manufacturing spaces and assist with proper training procedures for student employees.
  • Conduct post incident reviews for all safety incidents or equipment failures to identify root causes.
  • Develop proposals to address root cause problems to increase the overall level of safety for users of the facilities and improve equipment availability.
  • Implement the Hazard Communication and Safety program for the manufacturing spaces.
  • Ensure all required OSHA documentation and training is complete and up to date. 
  • Maintain tool inventory and coordinate the ordering of tooling each semester for assigned instructional making spaces.
  • Coordinate the inventory and order supplies as needed for required course project materials used each semester.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the equipment in all of the M.E. manufacturing spaces. 
  • Design, develop, and maintain outreach training materials to better prepare students prior to using the manufacturing spaces facilities.
  • Evaluate student knowledge and weaknesses when using them.
  • Use this information to create and deliver instructional workshops to better prepare students to use the M.E. manufacturing spaces.
  • Develop and supervise a “Summer student project” for two to four M.E. students to complete to further the instructional mission of the school as it relates to the usage and equipment in the M.E. making spaces.
  • Complete continuing education activities to improve knowledge of the materials and processes and how to effectively teach safe making methods.

What We're Looking For:
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM or Education
  • Four (4) years of experience required
  • Background in teaching or working in a teaching shop environment preferred
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
 
Skills needed:
  • Using Manual Machine Tools (metal, wood, fabrics, and basic fabrication techniques)
  • CAD software fundamentals using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar software
  • CNC knowledge desired but not required 
  • MODERATE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Lift and carry 25 to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to 60 lbs. occasionally
  • EXPOSURE to fumes/vapors, dust, odors, heavy machinery, lasers and sharp objects
