Job Summary:
This Instructional Designer role is intended for a forward-thinking professional who thrives on employee growth with organizational needs. The ideal candidate will design learning solutions for our employees, that meet learners’ needs and enhance our success as an employee-owned company.
The Instructional Designer’s scope of influence may extend across the employee lifecycle, supporting everything from onboarding to leadership development, performance management, and career advancement. With a strong foundation in instructional design and a passion for continuous improvement, this role is instrumental helping shape the culture of learning and engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in identifying skill or knowledge gaps among the organization’s employee population and develop learning materials, including training content, in response to identified needs
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure that the content is accurate, thorough, and calibrated both to the intended audience and the firm’s objectives
- Leverage a variety of modalities and formats to design diverse learning experiences, including synchronous and asynchronous delivery, using print, audio, visual, and multimedia content
- Identify and design learning experiences in the appropriate format for the target audience and material (to potentially include eLearning, Simulations, Assessments, Practice Activities, Job Aids and others) to achieve the desired outcomes
- Develop learning experiences from start to finish, including needs assessment/gap analysis, articulation of learning objectives, writing curriculum, developing content (including storyboarding, scripts, presentations, digital content, training handouts/materials, e-learning, multimedia development and production, technical writing, assessment writing)
- Collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data to evaluate the results of learning programs and make recommendations and adjustments to future programs to better meet development goals
- Analyze training gaps and create tailored development solutions
- Partner with business leaders to ensure that learning and development initiatives are relevant and impactful
- Manage learning projects for delivery within logistical parameters (deadline, budget, etc.)
- Manage and collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to produce learning experiences
Other Responsibilities:
- Assist in the identification of training needs that support business units, and align human resources program activities with business strategies
- Work cross-functionally with stakeholders at all levels of the organization
- Solving real-world problems with instructional design solutions
- Source, assess and curate third-party learning opportunities to complement and supplement internal materials and programs
- Manage key initiatives focused on onboarding, employee engagement, performance management, with a focus on employee retention
- Design and implement learning experiences that empower succession planning, leadership development, career pathing, and employee learning objectives with a mindset of accessibility and inclusion
- Research and remain informed on advancements and technologies in learning and development, including familiarity/proficiency with AI tools
- Support the planning and execution of the company's internal biennial in-person conference with a focus on event learning objectives, content development and coordination of delivery.
- May assist with the company's Learning Management System (LMS) to deliver and manage online learning experiences
- Additional HR related duties as assigned
Required Skills/Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Instructional Design, Learning Technology or relevant field of study or equivalent work experience
- 5+ years of work experience and broad knowledge of instructional design/adult learning techniques
- Proven track record of leading and supporting companywide initiatives like project management, professional development and soft skills, performance management, risk management, safety and compliance, operations, technical and engineering skills
- Positive attitude, growth mindset and learning agility
- Proactive, hands-on develop
- Knowledgeable about a variety of design models of creative learning solutions and experiences that are engaging, motivating, and effective for learners
- Continuous process improvement mindset and focus to enhance current offerings
- Proven strong oral and written communication skills
- Critical thinking (ability to analyze, synthesize, evaluate) and decision-making skills
- Strong presentation skills and ability to tailor communication/presentation to all levels of the organization (Microsoft Office Suite)
- Event planning and/or experience for internal conferences planning and with objectives
Preferred Skills/Experience:
- Experience as an engaging facilitator of learning experiences for an audience of professionals, solo and/or in partnership with a subject matter expert
- Master’s degree in education, Instructional Design, Instructional Coaching or the equivalent combination of training, education and experience.
- Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP
- Instructional design certification(s), CPLP, APTD, E-Learning, etc.
- Experience working at a Civil Engineering firm
Other Requirements:
- Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
- Ability to pass a pre-employment employment drug screening
The salary for this role is $75,000–$105,000 and may vary by location and other factors. We are committed to offering fair, competitive pay to all employees.
