Instructional Designer

Job Summary:
Online Programs and Academic Partnerships (OLAP) leads and mobilizes the Hawai'i Pacific University (HPU) instructional community. We support all HPU instructors and facilitate collaborative activities in pursuit of teaching excellence and innovation. We are seeking a dynamic candidate to serve as Instructional Designer, and work as part of OLAP to assist in online, hybrid, and in-person course development for a wide range of courses and programs at HPU. This individual assists in all phases of planning, designing, developing, producing, and evaluating courses and programs as well as creating and facilitating faculty learning offerings.

The Instructional Designer is an integral part of the OLAP team and works collaboratively with team members to promote quality teaching and learning experiences. The Instructional Designer position brings knowledge of instructional design theory, models, and best practices as they collaborate in various aspects of course development. Teamwork, organization, facilitation, and capacity for iterative feedback are key to the success of this position.

Projected start date is September 1, 2025

Compensation:
$60,000 - $70,000 per year

Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Note: This is a remote position, but the incumbent is expected to work from a stable environment (i.e. home office) with working hours aligned to Honolulu Standard Time, to be available to colleagues.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree and professional certificate in an appropriate discipline such as Education, Instructional Design, or Educational Technology.
• Demonstrated knowledge of learning theory, instructional design principles, and evidence-based best practices in online, hybrid, and in-person curriculum development.
• Experience with learning technology tools and learning management systems (Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).
• Ability to organize, prioritize, and navigate multiple projects and related details.
• Ability to work as a member of a team and provide and receive ongoing, constructive feedback.
• Ability to develop and maintain positive collegial relationships with cross-functional teams.

Desired Qualifications:
• Master's degree in Education, Instructional Design, or Educational Technology.
• Quality Matters certification or willingness to pursue a certification.
• Experience with Microsoft 365 applications, such as Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, time management, and presentation skills.
• Experience working effectively with faculty, students, and staff members in higher education.
• Experience with video, multimedia, or similar educational technologies.
• Experience supporting programs within external academic partnerships or cross-institutional collaborations.

Other Qualifications:
• Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position.
• Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
• Occasional travel to professional conferences is required.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:

1. Designing and developing online, hybrid, and in-person learning (70%)
• Assist in all aspects of course design and development. Regularly communicate and collaborate with faculty in planning course development and revision, selecting appropriate educational technology, and course delivery strategies.
• Draft course planning documents to aid in the development and revision of courses.
• Assist in facilitating faculty course-creation processes including developing course blueprints according to best instructional design principles, adapting course materials for digital formats, designing lesson modules, developing assessment measures, and coordinating with various faculty or departments to ensure course elements are developed in the LMS.
• Design resources and faculty learning experiences to support course design, development, and delivery.
• Facilitate faculty learning workshops, trainings, or other events.

2. Assist in program evaluation and quality assurance (20%)
• Assist in evaluating all aspects of teaching and learning.
• Create and facilitate feedback opportunities such as surveys, focus groups, and course evaluations.
• Participate in data generation and analysis.
• Work as part of a team to organize and implement data-driven strategies for ongoing quality assurance and program fidelity.

3. Professional Development (10%)
• Maintain currency in field of expertise through independent study, conferences, workshops, or other activities as appropriate.
• Use professional development to recommend implementation of industry best practices and solutions as may be most appropriate for HPU.
