We are seeking an experienced and nimble Instructional Designer Senior to join our growing Innovation and Emerging Initiatives team. Every day you'll make a difference in the lives of others by working at the intersection of cutting-edge pedagogy, emerging technologies, and universal design to craft engaging digital experiences that empower learners worldwide

ASU has partnered with the United States military to reimagine their learning ecosystem and to encourage and promote lifelong learning during a service member's time in and out of the uniform. In this exciting role, you'll collaborate closely with faculty, instructors, subject matter experts, and cross-functional teams to design and develop engaging, learner-centered experiences. You'll apply proven instructional design methodologies and adult learning theories to co-create content and experiences that resonate with learners across the globe and lifespan, all while optimizing workflows and processes to support scalable, efficient development.

While a deep knowledge of the U.S. military is not necessary to be successful in this role, we are looking for an individual who is passionate about innovation, design thinking, prototyping, access to education, and who loves working on complex, innovative, high-visibility projects that push the status quo. You will contribute to our vision of academic excellence, innovative course design, and next generation learning technologies that converge to create transformative student experiences.

Essential Duties:

  • Designs engaging learning experiences: Creates learner-centered courses in collaboration with subject matter experts and cross-functional partners. Develops curriculum maps, objectives, and modular activities grounded in adult learning theory and instructional design best practices.
  • Advances digital learning innovation: Leads the needs analyses and content reviews to keep curriculum current and effective. Translates best practices into engaging digital resources and guides the transition of in-person courses to hybrid or flipped formats that deepen learning and interaction.
  • Leads technology-enabled instructional strategy: Champions emerging technologies to inform instructional approaches while remaining hands-on in design and development. Establishes design standards that ensure quality, consistency, and alignment across projects.
  • Drives cross-project collaboration and delivery: Oversees end-to-end development of flexible, reusable learning assets. Coordinates across SMEs, designers, and media teams to streamline workflows, manage timelines, and deliver multiple projects efficiently.
  • Balances hands-on expertise with team leadership: Applies authoring tools and multimedia platforms to build custom learning solutions while providing strategic direction, mentoring collaborators, and aligning projects with broader program goals.
  • Performs other duties or projects as assigned or directed.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or a related area.
  • Demonstrated strong communicator who collaborates effectively with SMEs, vendors, and cross-functional teams, translating complex ideas for non-technical audiences.
  • Proven self-starter who manages multiple projects, deadlines, and shifting priorities with confidence.
  • Evidence of familiarity with tracking software such as Jira, Asana, Coda, or Monday.
  • Demonstrated detail-oriented leader with experience delivering high-quality learning solutions on time.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessibility standards, with experience designing active, learner-centered experiences (e.g., active-learning, project-based, or design-thinking approaches).
  • Teaching or instructional experience in higher education, military, or continuing education settings.
  • Some travel is required.
