Instructional Development Manager (IDM)

Position Summary

The Instructional Development Manager (IDM) is part of the Curricular Innovation and Production team and reports directly to the Associate Director of Curricular Development.

The IDM leads the design, development, and continuous improvement of engaging, high-quality course content across online, hybrid, and on-ground modalities. This role combines instructional design expertise, project leadership, and cross-functional collaboration to support timely course launches and curriculum innovation initiatives.

The IDM plays an important role in helping the institution thoughtfully integrate emerging educational technologies—including Generative AI—into curriculum design and instructional practices. This includes supporting the development of learning experiences and assessments that reflect the evolving role of AI in education and the workforce, while promoting academic integrity, critical thinking, and student engagement.

The IDM title reflects the multifaceted nature of the position, which spans instructional design, curriculum development, project oversight, faculty collaboration, educational technology integration, and publisher coordination.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and revision of courses and learning experiences across online, hybrid, and on-ground delivery formats.
  • Serve as project manager for course development and revision initiatives, managing timelines, deliverables, stakeholder communication, and workflow coordination.
  • Collaborate with faculty, subject matter experts, academic leadership, and external partners to align course content with learning outcomes, certification standards, employer expectations, and institutional quality standards.
  • Support the thoughtful integration of Generative AI and emerging technologies into course design, instructional strategies, learning activities, and assessment practices.
  • Help develop instructional approaches and assessments that recognize the growing presence of AI tools in academic and professional environments while promoting authentic learning and student skill development.
  • Evaluate and recommend AI-enhanced learning tools and instructional technologies that improve student engagement and learning effectiveness.
  • Design and develop engaging instructional materials using learning management systems and digital authoring tools such as Canvas, Articulate Storyline/RISE, Adobe eLearning tools, Camtasia, and related technologies.
  • Stay current with instructional design best practices, adult learning theory, educational technologies, industry certifications, and emerging trends in higher education.
  • Provide guidance, training, and support to faculty and staff during course development, implementation, and transition activities.
  • Analyze course feedback, learner performance data, and quality metrics to support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Adult Education, Curriculum Development, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum two years of higher education experience, preferably supporting online, blended, or adult learning environments.
  • At least three years of instructional design or curriculum development experience.
  • Demonstrated success managing complex instructional projects involving multiple stakeholders and deadlines.
  • Experience incorporating educational technologies into teaching and learning environments.
  • Experience developing certification-aligned curriculum or assessments is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Generative AI tools and their implications for instructional design, assessment, and learner engagement is highly desirable.

Skills and Competencies
  • Strong understanding of adult learning theory, instructional design methodologies, assessment alignment, and learner engagement strategies.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills; experience using project management tools such as Smartsheet preferred.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging educational technologies, including Generative AI applications in higher education.
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, high-production environment with rapidly evolving priorities, technologies, and timelines.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent course development projects while maintaining quality and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated adaptability and willingness to embrace continuous change, process improvement, and emerging instructional technologies.
  • Ability to design learning experiences and assessments that support authentic skill development in AI-enabled environments.
  • Proficiency with LMS platforms (Canvas preferred) and digital authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline/RISE, Captivate, Camtasia, or similar platforms.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across academic and operational teams.
  • Comfortable working in hybrid and remote environments.
