Build Scalable Systems as an IT Applications DevOps Engineer at CWI!
Are you passionate about automation, data integration, and building reliable systems at scale? The College of Western Idaho (CWI) is seeking an IT Applications DevOps Engineer to design, develop, and operate the systems that power data movement, backend automation, and enterprise workflows across the college.
This is a hands‑on engineering role where you’ll work at the intersection of DevOps, data engineering, and platform integration—building production‑ready pipelines, enabling modern CI/CD practices, and contributing to a collaborative, GitHub‑driven engineering culture.
Why Join CWI?
At CWI, technology plays a vital role in supporting students, faculty, and operations. In this role, you’ll help shape how data flows across enterprise systems, improve automation across the institution, and contribute to scalable, reliable infrastructure that enables data‑driven decision‑making and efficient operations.
Benefits:
CWI offers one of the most affordable and comprehensive benefits packages in higher education, including:
- Premium healthcare plans
- 11%+ employer retirement contributions
- Tuition discounts
- Generous personal leave
- Professional development opportunities
Data Integration & Pipeline Engineering:
- Design, build, and operate production data integration pipelines connecting SaaS platforms (e.g., Canvas LMS, Microsoft 365, SharePoint) with Azure SQL Managed Instance and Microsoft Fabric
- Own the full integration lifecycle, including API design, ingestion, transformation, and delivery
- Ensure pipelines are observable, resilient, secure, and maintainable
- Implement secure credential and secret management using Key Vaults, managed identities, and certificate‑based authentication
- Monitor pipeline health, respond to incidents, and perform root‑cause analysis with documented resolution
Automation & Backend Development:
- Develop backend automation solutions using PowerShell and Python to streamline and eliminate manual workflows
- Build reusable modules and orchestration frameworks to standardize automation practices
- Integrate with enterprise REST APIs using OAuth 2.0 flows, including handling pagination, rate limiting, and error recovery
- Support Azure SQL Managed Instance workloads, including performance tuning, indexing strategies, and schema management
CI/CD & Engineering Excellence:
- Develop and maintain GitHub Actions workflows for code, infrastructure, and database deployments
- Lead best practices around pull requests, branch protection, peer review, and deployment governance
- Implement CI/CD standards, including automated testing, artifact management, deployment gating, and rollback strategies
- Contribute to infrastructure‑as‑code practices using Bicep, ARM, or Terraform
Architecture & Cross‑Functional Collaboration:
- Partner with Business Intelligence teams to support data architecture frameworks (e.g., Bronze/Silver/Gold medallion model)
- Collaborate with Enterprise Applications and IT Infrastructure teams to align integration strategies and system design
- Author and maintain technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, runbooks, and system inventories
- Contribute to team standards and ensure engineering best practices are defined and followed
What We’re Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field or equivalent professional experience
- Three (3) or more years of experience in DevOps, data engineering, systems integration, or platform engineering
- Strong scripting skills in PowerShell, Python, or both, with experience building production‑quality code
- Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server or Azure SQL, including T‑SQL and performance optimization
- Hands‑on experience with GitHub and GitHub Actions (pull requests, workflows, secrets management, CI/CD pipelines)
- Experience integrating with REST APIs, including OAuth 2.0 authentication and structured data formats (JSON, CSV, etc.)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document technical solutions for both technical and non‑technical audiences
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Azure data platforms, Microsoft Fabric, or enterprise SaaS integrations
- Familiarity with data warehousing concepts and analytics pipelines
- Experience working in higher education or another complex, multi‑system environment
