IT Senior Network Engineer Full Description

Job Description Summary

This position is available within the University of Maryland's Division of Information Technology (DIT).

The Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX) within the DIT invites applications for an IT Senior Network Engineer to provide advanced network design, research, implementation, and escalation support across the optical, switched, and routed layers of the MAX network and its enhanced services. The role is responsible for high-level architectural planning and the design and deployment of current and next-generation network infrastructures, while also performing hands-on maintenance and operational support of DWDM optical systems, dark fiber, routers, switches, and physical plant. The Engineer will lead or support production network migrations with minimal service disruption, evaluate and select vendor platforms for future deployments, and ensure reliable IPv4/IPv6 connectivity across wide area research and education (R&E) networks.

The ideal candidate brings extensive experience supporting large, high-performance enterprise and research networks in academic or similar environments, with strong knowledge of WAN design, network monitoring and management tools, DNS services and support for software tools. The role requires expertise with optical and network test equipment, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will also assist the Senior Systems Architect in the modernization of a robust, scalable, and sustainable systems and software architecture framework. Success in this position depends on excellent communication, teamwork, customer service, and the ability to work independently while supporting a diverse community of technical and non-technical stakeholders.

**This position is considered essential and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergency to help maintain the continuity of University services.**

This position may be subject to being on call 24/7 during scheduled time periods.

Physical Demands: At times the Network Engineers must install network gear into the network racks. An Engineer must be able to carry 50 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: Four (4) years of professional experience supporting the operations, maintenance, and administration of information technology infrastructure. Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Strong written and oral communication skills Ability to to lead presentations with small to medium sized groups Able to organize and provide direction to junior staff members A demonstrated commitment to customer service Provides leadership and helps bridge the gap between team manager and team members on technical topics Ability to effectively manage workload and delivery assignments on time Skilled in the use of office productivity software such as Office 365 or Google Workspaces
