Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group is looking for a Junior Designer to support the 1-color team and conceive creative and engaging book designs for our young adult, middle grade, non-fiction and graphic novel titles.
What you'll do:
- Design and set up mechanicals/effects plates for jackets, covers, and interiors
- Create engaging cover and interior designs through composition, typography, illustration, and photography
- Route materials following department procedures and guidelines
- Typeset corrections to jackets, covers, and interiors throughout routing process
- Research and suggest illustrators, photographers, and stock images for projects
- Articulate concepts with polished, convincing sketch comps
- Collaborate closely with editorial team and other internal departments
- Deliver notes to and handle correspondence with illustrators
- Follow and help maintain on-time schedules
- Respond to queries and liaise with other departments on behalf of the 1-color team as requested
What skills you'll bring:
- Adobe Creative Suite, Google Suite, Mac Platform
- Expert in color theory and design fundamentals
- Exceptional portfolio displaying strong typographic skills
- Knowledge of and an interest in the book publishing industry
- An ability to collaborate and compromise with colleagues
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Team player who is motivated to learn from colleagues
- A love of reading
Ideal Experience/Education:
- At least 1 - 3 years bookmaking experience
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in graphic design or other related field OR equivalent work experience.
Salary range for this role is $50K.
