Description | Reporting to the Manager of IT Security, the Junior Security Analyst contributes to the effective operation and continuous improvement of the University’s information security program. The analyst plays a key role in maintaining and monitoring security tools, investigating alerts, and supporting incident response activities. This early-career position offers the opportunity to gain practical experience across multiple areas of cybersecurity in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. The successful candidate will work closely with members of the ITS Information Security team, colleagues across the Information Technology Services division, and other campus stakeholders to help safeguard Hofstra’s information assets and foster a secure technology environment in support of academic, research, and administrative functions.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Investigates and responds to suspicious messages reported by users or detected through monitoring platforms (e.g., Microsoft 365 Outlook, Gmail). Monitors alerts and logs from tools including CrowdStrike, Microsoft Defender, Azure Security Center, and others to identify potential threats. Assists in configuring, maintaining, and updating security tools and dashboards used in vulnerability management, email protection, and endpoint defense. Conducts routine reviews of event logs and network traffic to identify anomalies and contribute to incident detection efforts. Serves as a first responder for low-severity security events, escalating as appropriate to senior team members. Documents findings and assists in root cause analysis of confirmed incidents. Collaborates with the Service Desk and ITS colleagues to resolve security-related service tickets and contributes to user education efforts. Contributes to the implementation of institutional cybersecurity awareness initiatives, including user training and outreach. Assists with documentation and tracking of compliance efforts related to internal security policies and external regulatory frameworks (e.g., NIST, GLBA). Participates in routine assessments to support audit readiness and continuous improvement. Remains informed of emerging threats, tools, and best practices in cybersecurity. Participates in team meetings, professional development opportunities, and mentorship initiatives. Maintains a commitment to ethical conduct, discretion, and continuous learning. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications | Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field required. At least 1-2 years of relevant work experience in information technology or cybersecurity support. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Understanding of higher education security and privacy requirements. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Motivated to learn and grow within a team environment. Demonstrated understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the academic, cultural and social diversity in the Hofstra University community.
Preferred Qualifications | Entry-level certification such as CompTIA Security+, CySA+, or similar preferred. Pursuit of certifications like CISSP, CEH, or similar is encouraged. Basic knowledge of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, VPNs). Familiarity with operating systems (Windows, Linux) and scripting basics (e.g., PowerShell, Bash). Familiarity with various security tools (NMAP, etc.).

Salary/Salary Range | $67,500 - $72,500

Hofstra University provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and education. In addition to the salary offered, we offer a collegial and inclusive culture, and a benefits program which includes generous paid time off, paid holidays, tuition remission for employees and eligible dependents, and a retirement plan with University contributions.
*Salary ranges indicated for positions covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement are in accordance with the CBA.
