Job Description
SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director of Instructional Design and Faculty Development, the Lead Instructional Designer plays a strategic and hands-on role in guiding the design and development of high-quality, innovative learning experiences across multiple modalities (online, hybrid, and in-person). This position provides leadership and mentorship to a team of instructional designers and provides guidance and support throughout the instructional design process for online program development. Driving innovative instructional design initiatives and developing impactful faculty development programs, the Lead Instructional Designer collaborates closely with faculty, academic departments, and institutional stakeholders to advance teaching excellence and student learning outcomes.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide guidance and education to the university community on instructional design methodologies, processes, and best practices for designing and delivering in-person, online, or blended/hybrid courses.
  • Drive innovative instructional design initiatives and develop impactful learning solutions for the development of high-quality courses and programs.
  • Collaborate with academic departments or programs to identify learning needs and design comprehensive learning opportunities and experiences to align instructional design exercises with the academic goals and priorities.
  • Research and implement best practices in instructional design, digital pedagogy, and learning science.
  •  Lead the development and implementation of instructional design standards (including accessibility standards and inclusive design principles), quality assurance processes and project management workflows.
  • Lead and manage course design projects from conception to completion, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with academic standards.
  • Lead and mentor a team of instructional designers, provide guidance and support throughout the instructional design process, and foster a culture of collaboration, creativity, and continuous learning within the instructional design team.
  • Lead faculty development initiatives, including but not limited to organizing and implementing in-person events, online forums, and instructor-led online courses for faculty.
  • Consult with faculty to design and revise courses, such as instructional strategies, learning activities, instructional materials, etc., which are grounded in evidence-based practices.
  • Develop instructional design resources, toolkits, templates, and guides to support faculty development and curriculum innovation.
  • Facilitate workshops, training sessions, and consultations on course design, digital tools, and emerging pedagogies.
  • Evaluate and recommend instructional technologies that enhance teaching and learning experiences.
  • Partner with IT, libraries, and academic departments to support effective integration of learning technologies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related field.
  • Minimum of four years of experience in instructional design or a related role in higher education.
  • Proven expertise in online and hybrid course development and instructional strategies.
  • Experience with faculty development.
  • Experience managing instructional design projects.
  • Deep knowledge of learning theories, instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE, backwards design), and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED:
  • Proficiency with learning management systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with a variety of emerging educational technologies, including Generative AI, content delivery, collaboration, assessment, web conferencing, and multimedia tools.
  • Experience with online program development and data-informed course and program improvements.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
